First Cut – Samuel Kierstead

I decided to laser engrave this design first. It did not occur to me that the center would be cut out since there are so many laser passes in the same spot. The center reminds me of the center of a flower. There are similarities in both the look and texture.

I noticed that the density of shapes in the center creates depth and pulls you. into the piece.

I noticed the geometry creates an optical illusion which tricks me into thinking its moving.

I noticed that the hole the laser made was not perfectly round, I am drawn to the abstractness of this.

I noticed how dark the lines are and the great contrast between the base wood and laser cut lines. It’s really interesting how the center of the piece is burnt and cut out which breaks up the lines.

I’m struck by how intricate the design is and how it does look like a blooming flower

I’m struck by how clean the design is and how well it transfered over to the actual laser cutter!
