My concept for the layers project is to create a stylized sci-fi tree. For my sketch, I actually built a model in Minecraft using world-edit (for me, it’s much easier to conceptualize an object in 3D instead of starting with a sketch). The added benefit of this method is I was able to separate out the layers, which I will use to create my vector art. I want the foliage to look melted and gelatinous, so all the lines will be smoothed out. The colors will also look bright and “alien,” with bright blue or green for the top and white painted wood for the trunk.

The layers artist I was inspired by was Jen Stark. I love her use of bright colors to make her pieces stand out and feel very vibrant. Additionally, the way she creates and distorts perspective in her work is very interesting; combined with the bright colors, it makes her work feel “trippy” and like optical illusions.

What is your plan for making the leaves look “gelatinous”?
When making the vectors, I’m using much rounder shapes, just using the screenshot as a general guide. The leaves will be cut from translucent acrylic, so I’m hoping stacking it will make the leaves look kinda like jello
What type of materials are you planning on using for the leaves of the tree?
I want to use brightly colored acrylic, possibly one of the fluorescent acrylics on inventables.
What is your plan to construct this and will it be colored?
I plan to use colored acrylic for the leaves and painted plywood for the trunk. I’m still deciding what color to make the leaves, but the stem will be white. In each piece, I’ve been placing a little engraving dot, so I can line everything up easier.
Will the final design have minecraft/pixelated aesthetic?
No, I think that could be interesting but I wanted this piece to look smoother/more organic
What is your plan for smoothing the lines in the foliage?
I’ve been using the photo and basically tracing over it in Vectornator with curved lines, using the photo as a guide.
Since you already sliced the layers in minecraft, do you plan on somehow transferring those shapes into inkscape? Or was this simply a proof of concept?
I took the screenshot, and separated it into different images with each layer. Then I used Vectornator to make the actual outlines, using the pictures as guides.
what made you decide to do vertical layers as opposed to horizontal layers?
How did you do the layered version in Minecraft? Was it by hand or is there a tool for that?
What made you choose to create this design in Minecraft?
