Lantern Design – Lauren Faulkner

My lantern design in based on the song “Ptolemaea” by Ethel Cain. The song is horrifying and beautiful in a extremely unique way, and I’ve been listening to it often. Based on the lyrics and feel of the song, I designed these 3 sides for the lantern; the fourth side will have the song lyrics on it. The lantern will be made out of paper, and a red light will be used.

I’m hoping to get some suggestions on how to amp-up the horror and better represent the song. For example, the “sacrificial lamb” and flies are big motifs in the song, but I’m unsure how to incorporate them.

Below are my first test cuts for the two forest sides. I was happy to see that the paper I had worked well on the laser cutter. One issue I noticed was lining things up; for my next attempt I’ll add cuts to the corners of the paper to help me line up each piece.

How big do you plan on making this lantern?

    1. Lauren says:

      It will be about 4″ x 4″ x 6″

what are you planning on using to light your lantern? what color are you thinking of using with the lights?

    1. Lauren says:

I’m planning to use a sunset lamp I have, which I’ll set to red.

What is your plan for incorporating the lyrics onto the 4th side? Will this be a vector engrave of the outline of each letter or a raster engrave?

    1. Lauren says:

It will be a vector engrave; I’m using paper, so raster engraving is not really an option

I noticed the a-symmetry used by including more detail on the eyes for the left face as opposed to the simpler cuts for the eyes on the right face.

So I guess my question would be what made you decide to do that?

    2. Lauren says:

I built the face based on a reference image I chose, which had dramatic lighting and hair covering part of the face.

What material do you plan to use for the frame of the lantern?

    1. Lauren says:

I’ll probably use thin plywood painted black
