Layers Design – Beckett

For this project, I was really interested in creating a 3d sculpt (see inspiration below). I wanted a recognizable figure that was still a little challenging so I chose a hand flashing the devil horns sign (or whatever you choose to call it). I know this symbol has a lot of meaning in other cultures but to me, the symbol is a sign that represents metal and a lot of other heavy music that I enjoy. Material wise I’ll probably make it out of cardboard or wood depending on how well the first draft goes.

Here’s my concept design, the original file is from vancleefus on myminifactory but I imported the mesh into meshmixer and redesigned a few aspects as well as added a base, filling in and re-meshing the entire model. Additionally, I retextured the mesh to give it a better chance of turning out looking like an actual hand. Unfortunately, I’m unable to get fusion slicer working so I don’t have much of an idea of what sort of material amount I’ll be needing but that isn’t much of a problem since I plan to use recycled cardboard.

What is your plan for the size of this?

    1. jbpeale says:

I was aiming for 1:1 but it ended up being around 12x10x5

  2. Sam says:

Do you plan on also building a stand so the hand can have that orientation?

    1. jbpeale says:

yep I was thinkin about that but haven’t quite gotten around to making it yet, figured id make the first draft before I design the stand.

How much detail are you planning to have/how thick will the layers be?

    1. jbpeale says:

current layer thickness is 0.2450″ which is 1.5 ply cardboard which is a good bit thicker then regular stuff but detail isn’t much of a concern more just getting the general shape down.

What is your plan for the slicing? Are you thinking horizontal or vertical?

    1. jbpeale says:

tried doing eveything vertical but one part ended up horizontal which isn’t great but it doesn’t look too bad

How many layers are you planning on using for this? Would it be best sliced horizontally or vertically?
