Lantern Design WIP – Beckett Peale

For this project, I’m hoping to recreate the Steal Your Face symbol in 3ish D using bottom-lit laser-cut acrylic. The essential components of this project will include a box for holding each of the “slides” and three laser cut/engraved “slides” (Red, Blue, White/grey) as well as lights power supplies, and controllers. An additional aspect that I’m hoping to include in this design is that you will only be able to see the full image when looking at the piece straight on so that each of the slides lines up, sort of the opposite of my layers project which could not fully be seen when looking straight on. As far as progress goes it’s a pretty well-known design so I’m trying to put every little spin on it that I can to make it my own creation but for now I’m just trying to get the basic shapes down. in the future Id love to add lyrics to each of the slides to add texture and depth but for now, I need a proof of concept to confirm if I can infract and get the white to show through.

Ive only added the blue for visualization but you can kind of get the idea
quick sketch of how I’m hoping it’ll work

What inspired you to do the Steal Your Face symbol?

    1. Beckett says:

I like the grateful dead and I also like their logo lol pretty simple really

Are you trying to achieve the shapes by rastering the different sections of the acrylic so the light hits the rasters with acrylic’s fiber optic properties, or are you planning to cut out the shapes and have the outlines catch the light instead?

    1. Beckett says:

the shape is going to be achieved through three different edge light “slides” each with a specific color relating to a region of the design

How do you plan to incorporate controllers into your piece?

    1. Beckett says:

the only real control in this piece is going to be the color of the led strips which will each be static (one red one white and one blue) check my newer posts for more detials
