Layers Design – Ian Cody

I will be finding a way to trace this map for my layers project. I am not sure weather I will trace the bitmap or draw the lines myself, either way there will be 4 layers, one for each color pictured. The Yellow layer will become the focal point as it will be the highest layer and in the middle of the piece. I also plan to engrave street lines on top of the yellow layer, and possible the ocean depth numbers on the blue and white layers, creating repetition. I plan to use hardwood or plywood for this project. Therefore, all layer will most likely be stained a wood color, however, I have thought about dyeing the ocean blue.
This Piece from the layer piece inspired me to create a complex depth map. I have seen layered depth maps before, but never on that is this detailed and has this many layers. I am also inspired by the way the artist colored this piece. I believe they only dyed the water layers, while leaving the upper layers untouched. This leads to a clean and simple look.

What’s your plan for the words on the map? Are you planning on writing out the locations, or just leave it purely geographical?

Why did you choose this location? Do you expect your viewer to connect with the maps location or does it have a personal meaning?
