Lantern Design – Ian Cody

on
For My lantern Design I am building upon my Layers project. I have added more engravings and revised raster portions which took too long to engrave. The biggest iteration will be adding an accrilyic layer which will light up by using LED Standoffs. I am using inspiration from an example shown in class, and pictured below.

A question I have is what I should use to color the wood blue. I want use acrylic paint however I am worried this will fill in some engravings I have on the bottom layer. Should I use dye instead of paint?

This is an image of my layers project .svg file to serve as comparison for my most recent lantern .svg file.

I notice how you are incorporating multiple different materials and colors into your design. What are you going to use to stick the acrylic down to the wood? In my opinion, wood dye would probably work better than acrylic paint but it is important to be careful because dye can spread easily and can be quite dark.

I plan to try and use expoxy, however, it will depend what I can get my hands on.

you could try shining light through resin which might avoid the issue of it just lighting up one layer of the acrylic. If you did the layers then filled in the space with resin you might be able to achieve a better dispersion of the light.

Would using a thin layer of tissue paper as opposed to a resin or epoxy allow for mor light? Or is the idea to reduce the amount of light by having a thicker layer in the gaps?
