For my lantern, I was greatly inspired by the piece that used inward raster engraving to create unique sources of light on what initially appears to be a blank cube. I decided to use this idea for my lantern as well. A cube is a simple shape, but can look neat and unassuming at first. I themed my lantern design around divinity and eggs. There isn’t really too much deep meaning to my designs… I just wanted the lantern to look strange and unnatural once turned on. The darker areas are actually going to be the brightest once this is engraved and there is a light inside, and I am going to be painting the outside of the box black. I have a circle cut out of the bottom in order to get inside for the light. The box is 4x4x4. Everything will be done with rasters, no vectors.

(uploading the svg made it real small. so here is a png instead.)
I know you mentioned that there isn’t too much deep meaning to your designs but what gave you the idea to make these drawings?
mostly my recent media consumption. i think i was watching a let’s play of super lesbian animal rpg while drawing these which inspired the angel/devil motif, as well as a little bit of pandora hearts. the egg cracking and the chick (unknown is dead or alive) was directly inspired by revolutionary girl utena.
what material are you planning on using for your lantern?
plywood! apologies for forgetting to specify. i am a simple materials kinda guy
You definitely succeeded with making unnatural shapes! Each design is super interesting; it looks like a magic/cursed object from a fantasy world.
What are your plans for the darker areas? will those be darker in the final piece (less engraved?) will those be lighter (more engraved). this is a great design and i am interested to see how it comes out.
the darkest areas are the most engraved and therefore the brightest. that’s why the egg is solid black – i want it to be the focal point.
What were your thoughts about how it will look with the black paint? Do you think it may make it harder to see some of the areas with lighter engraving?
i definitely need to test the black paint out on a raster engrave before painting the whole thing. i do think it might make it harder to see and i might have to skip it.
what inspired this design?
answered to ana above ^^
