Lantern Design

on

In this project I will attempt to make a growing tree scene within my lantern. I would like to make the vessel spin if it is possible to add an interesting spin on the design. I took inspiration from several sources such as the tree box image, the hexagon bees image, and the greatest showman spinning lantern. I debated adding a design to the hexagons as well, cutting some all the way through and others mostly, that will be something I try out when I go to do my cuts.

My current design

reference hexagons
reference greatest showman

What does the yellow mean for the laser? Will it fully cut it or do an engrave to the design?

    1. Ben says:

I was debating making the yellow fully cut out and red partially cut out, i will have to try it out on the laser cutter to see how it works

How are you planning on making the lantern spin? Will it be automatic or manual? (ex: can spin on a lazy susan manually or maybe add a motor to spin automatically)

    1. Ben says:

I was thinking manual similar to a lazy susan

The contrast between the organic forms of the tree and the geometrical pattern of the hexagons is very interesting. You can get pretty cheap lazy susans at places like TJ Max and Marshalls to make it spin.

The hexagon pattern fits into this design nicely. Did you use inkscape to pattern the hexagons or a different program? I also really like the concept of watching the tree grow in different stages.

Are you going to add glue to the finger intersections or try to compensate for kerfs and get a press fit?

What is your plan for the lighting?

  7. Reyhan says:

What color lighting do you plan to use? How will you make it spin, and will this affect the lighting components?
