I really like how the fusion 360 slicing tool works so I’m going to attempt to use it to make a scaled model of my combat bot. In this initial revision lots of the details don’t come through well, due to missing the layer slice or simply being to small. Since I know Solidworks well, ill fix these issues in Solidworks and import back into the software. My current idea is to make the middle layers out of plywood, so its cheap and easy to cut, but make the top and bottom layers out of acrylic so you can see internal geometry. If worst comes to worst i can manually slice within a cad software where I have more control.
Since there are so many different colors that wont come through through slicing, I’ll engrave each layer to match the color it is meant to be. From a distance it should just look like a simple model, but as you get near it should show its inner details.
What are your thoughts on making the internal layers out of a colored acrylic so you can see the internals but still see through the piece?
I feel if I have too many clear layers it might be hard to look at and understand, I’ll have to try it though!
What is your plan for connecting the pieces to each other? Are you going to use glue or another type of fastener? How are you going to make sure that the acrylic does not show the glue between itself and the wood?
Since the design itself has standoffs to keep most parts together, I’ll use some metal standoffs and screws. They should also contrast nicely with the acrylic.
How do you plan on adhering the layers?
I plan to use screws and standoffs.
Do you plan to have any of the components functional (like turning wheels, and spinning weapon)?
The weapon will be able to spin, but not with a bearing or bushing or anything like that.
What is your plan for materials and fastening
What are your thoughts about the morality of fighting robots, and how does that factor into your design?\
I only fight robots in a cage at competitions. They aren’t meant to fight humans. Some people have said they could take it, I don’t wanna test it.
What is your plan for making sure parts are aligned in the correct orientation? Maybe use vector engrave traces to map out the smaller pieces?
Since you can see edges easily in acrylic I can’t use engraves to align pieces. I will use the standoff holes to assemble it.
How will you use color in this piece? You mentioned engraving; will the color scheme be monochromatic, based on the engraving depth?
I’m now considering using different color acrylic for different pieces. Possibly just one translucent color for the body, then a painted opaque weapon piece.
