Altered Toys WIP Critique – Amanda Jones

I was able to get into the lab and use Solidworks to create my fidget. I am planning on using a ball bearing to make the top spin. I have also added a screw fidget on one side of the bar and a magnet fidget to the end of the staff. As seen below I have made them all separate pieces to assemble together. Do you guys like the proportions? Should I move the screw fidget further down, I am afraid the user’s hand might bump into the spin fidget. Also, do you guys have any fun decorative ideas I could put on it? I can’t tell if it feels a little plain.

I also added the Greek engraving of Poseidon on the trident. Solidworks could not do one letter that was a curvy w so I had to replace it so it’s a little incorrect.

I am struck by your intricate detail, but I am curious what orientation you plan to print this in? It may be difficult to get all of the details to be symmetric if you print horizontally on the bed.

To be honest, I was going to print it on a smaller scale horizontally to see how it would change the design. I might break it into smaller parts and print vertically?

I do not think it feels plain. What is your plan for the finish of the toy in terms of color or are you painting it? I think it would look cool with metallic paint and that would add another visual element.

    1. Amanda says:

I like the metallic paint idea!

I notice how detailed you design is. I was wondering what color(s) you are going to print it out of. It looks like it will print in multiple sections so it could be cool to use many different colors in your print.

im still not 100% on what parts are fidget or not (i think i will have to see it work to get it, lol) but this is looking really cool! one thing i am concerned about is the vertical and spherical nature of the design. you may run into difficulties printing it standing up, but printing it on it’s side will add texture you may not want.

I enjoy the level of detail in your design. The threads are intriguing to me. I wonder if the added complexity of adding threaded parts is worth the effort since it can be tough with 3D printers to achieve that level of quality.
