Kyla Fu Introduction and Portfolio

on

Hi! My name is Kyla Fu and I’m from Palo Alto, California. I’m a current sophomore studying biomedical and mechanical engineering. Art currently doesn’t play as big of a role in my life as I would like it to. I enjoy art as a creative outlet and as a way to escape from other stresses in life, however, I’ve never dedicated much time to it outside of a class. For me, taking an art class makes me set aside time for art. I would love to prioritize and explore it more in my free time. In my life goals, at least on the career side, it doesn’t play much of a role other than potentially in the form of product design or medical device design. In the ideal world, it would be nice to have art as something I pursue long term whether that’s as a personal interest or in a career.

My main experience in art making is mostly in traditional art forms like drawing and sketching, however, I also gained more exposure to digital art through taking 2D animation last term. I also have a lot of experience with CAD through Solidworks, however, the designs I’ve made have been more for engineering designs than artistic purposes.

Other creative arts I enjoy are fashion, music, and tinkering. I really enjoy expressing myself through the way I dress and present myself, my personal style is definitely one that developed over time as I’ve discovered more of my identities and self. In the future, I’d like to learn how to make and design my own clothes. I also enjoy listening to music and playing music as a way to express myself emotionally. Lastly, I like to express myself creatively through tinkering and rapid prototyping. Especially recently, I’ve gotten into 3D printing for creating medical device prototypes as part of my job.

Paper shadow box I made as part of a class in highschool, we used a cricut machine to cut out the paper.
Drawing using color pencils for AR1100, adapting on Monet’s Women with Parasol painting
Place holder image for a project I’ve been working on to create a 3D printed case for a pulse oximeter
Painting I made in highschool with newspaper clippings and gauze
Project I had where I made a a glove incorporating an arduino and flexible potentiometer sensors to communicate with a robotic hand
My 2D Animation 1 reel from when I took the course last term, this was the first time I’ve ever animated something or drew digitally. Something I struggled with was drawing the same thing over and over again for each frame.
Drawing with graphite for AR1100, self portrait but then you have to turn yourself into a different animal
In highschool, I was part of an FRC team. This is what got me into engineering, CAD, and designing in the first place. I designed and created the shooting mechanism on this robot.
