Introduction & Portfolio

Hello,

I’m Beckett Peale from Portland Oregon. I’m currently studying RBE and doing some art on the side when I’m motivated. Most of what I do I wouldn’t necessarily consider art per se more messing around in the shop but the end product often has some sort of artistic element to it so we’ll call it art for now. As for my goals surrounding art, I don’t have many aside from constantly trying to expand and grow my expanse and knowledge in different mediums and techniques. My formal art education comes mostly from my early and middle school education which had a heavy focus on many different kinds of art from painting to knitting to carving. Still, aside from that and a few classes in high school, I haven’t had much in the way of formal art education. On that note the vast majority of what I do I’ve taught myself through trial and error. most of what I’ll be displaying here will be related to music visualization as it’s the most visually appealing of my hobbies, the thought behind a lot of these projects is mostly focused on adding another form of sensory stimuli/dimension to a song or piece of music. aside from music stuff, I’ll show some of my woodturning which is all done on a vintage wood lathe (from the late 50s) that I found on craigslist and fixed up, additionally, the metal casting is all from a homemade propane foundry I made a few years back.

Finally here’s a partial list of what I like to do that’s at least art related:

Woodworking

Woodturning

Metal Casting

Jewelry making

Metalsmithing

Circuit design

Music Visualisation using a vintage analog oscilloscope and a custom circuit I designed to drive an LED strip in correlation to the volume of the song.
Dorm room version of a similar design but this time I used a spare subwoofer amp as the driver and LFC
Another method of music visualization, this ones called a Ruben’s Tube and is basically a pipe filled with a flammable gas (propane in this video) and some sort of pressure differential/driver applied to one end (in this case an old speaker) and a row of holes in the top. When lit this setup allows you to see standing waves and nodes in the flame height. You can also play music through the speaker to get some pretty interesting effects.

This is a copper disk which I etched the relief of the moon’s surface into and then polished the surface. I also oxidized the divets and left them naturally colored to add contrast. Also pardon my dirty fingers and messy background in just about all of these photos, it’s just the way things are.

aluminum cast from a plaster mold of a 3d printed design I made in fusion
more aluminum casts
some jewelry I made a while ago this is a piece of ghost quartz in brass bands

more brass jewelry

these next few images are a progression from wood stock I found in my backyard and hacked up with a chainsaw to fit in the lathe to flat bottomed finished bowl

roughing cut and general shape established

exterior finalised and sanded

interior hollowed out, sanded and the entire thing finished in beeswax

the finished product, some cool spalt lines, and cross-cut grain ends make some interesting patterns
intestine project this one’s called a captured ring goblet, and the ring on the stem was made from the same stock that the rest of the piece was made from, no seams, no joints, no glue.
this is a re-creation of the Abby Road album cover I made for a friend a while back, more cast aluminum

this is just a cool image of molten aluminum in a mold about 1-2 minutes after being poured where you can just begin to see the crystals form on the surface as it cools
