Layers Concept – Harris Brancazio

For my project I drew up this motorcycle wheel in SolidWorks with the intent of slicing it into sections to be cut.
The sliced version is shown here with 12 layers
I took my inspiration from this art piece. I appreciate the way a 3D model can be replicated so simply with flat panels. I implemented this same idea in my wheel, but I will need to come up with a way to keep the wheel upright for viewing.

What were your thoughts about the materials you would use? Will the wheel be made of cardboard like the inspiration piece?

    1. Harris says:

The wheel will be made out of wood!

  2. Ben says:

what is your plan for making the rubber part of the wheel?

    1. Harris says:

My plan is to paint wood black.

  3. Ana says:

What inspired you to make wheels?

    1. Harris says:

Wheels make the world go round!

  4. Percy says:

how large are you planning on making this piece? depending on the size, the inner spokes may be very small and brittle – how do you plan to keep them together?

    1. Harris says:

That’s an astute observation, I plan to make it about 4 inches in diameter, since no forces are acting on it, I think glue will suffice.

  5. Sam says:

What is your plan for aligning all of the pieces? I feel like adding in pegs would help keep things straight and also probably improve structural integrity.

    1. Harris says:

I am considering adding pins, this is a good point.

  6. Reyhan says:

Do you have a plan to make the rubber part of the wheel look different from the inside section?

    1. Harris says:

I am planning on painting the wood.
