Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Concept<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

For my subject I chose cacti because they’re all over the place back home and they just make me happy. I decided to play with the idea of layers and make it a sort of futuristic cactus sculpture. To do this I’m planning to have the different layers offset from each other and use acrylic with sheets of colored cardstock sandwiched between them to give a clean look to it. Below are my initial concept drawings for 4 different cactus designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I chose this sculpture piece for inspiration because I liked the 3D aspect and I want to make a project I can hold and move around easily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I ended up going with the barrel cactus design (the small round one) for my project. I decided to use smaller acrylic circles as spacers between my layers and cut a rectangular dowel from my acrylic sheet to hold it all together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final Assembly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I ended up cutting 2 sets of the cardstock circles in different colors, and I liked how it looked with both colors so I decided to use both. The sculpture now shows a different shade of green as you flip it upside down. I didn’t account for the width of the laser properly, so my holes for the dowel were all too big. to fix this I just cut a strip of cardstock and wrapped it around the dowel until it fit properly though the center holes. this solution however made the dowel rounded so the circles rotate a little bit, which wasn’t the intention but is pretty fun to play with. I was able to use super glue to secure the top and bottom circles. The dowel was a little bit long and I haven’t been able to cut the end bit off yet, but I’ll be doing that when I go into Foise to cut my next project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
