Sydney – Lantern Design

on

For my lantern design, I got inspired by brainstorming with Mandy. My design is a dissolving honeycomb pattern and I added 2 bees that are supposed to be on opposite sides (I need to fix it), and one bee on top! I intend to stain the wood a dark brown or black color, and then to attach some sort of yellowish paper (or some other material) on the inside of the board, to give a “black and yellow” illusion. I bought a black lamp base and warm vintage lightbulb to go inside. I think this will look perfect on my bedside table! The little cut-outs on the bottom are feet and a place where the lamp cord can go through.

My question for you guys is what kind of material do you suggest I use on the inside? I would like it to diffuse the light and give a warm glow.

Hi Sydney! I really like this design! To answer your question, I think you could use a yellow fabric (maybe a linen) to diffuse the light but allow some to pass through.

What were your thoughts on making the box a hexagon shape?

    1. Sydney says:

I had thought originally to make it a hexagon, but decided against it because the finger joints wouildn’t fit together as well, and I just wanted to go for simplicity since being too creative bit me in the butt on my layers project.

Hi Sydney! I definitely think that you should use a yellow acrylic behind the black wood, and that would look really cool.

I love your idea! I agree with the other commenters, I think some sort of frosted yellow acrylic would look great behind a dark wood!

Hi Sydney! I love how fun and light your design is! For your question I would say try out a few different papers or acrylic to get the right look!

Hi Sydney! I love this design and think you have thought about its final display very well from design to lamp base. I wanted to offer you another material to give your yellow effect and so I found this pack of yellow Transparent Color Plastic Sheets that looks like a cool $10 option that won’t hinder as much light as paper would. Here’s the link to what I’m talking about, maybe it could give you some related suggestions as well.

Hi Sydney! I love your design! For the material, sanding acrylic and painting it a goldenrod color might work.

Hi Sydney! I think this is a really nice idea! If you want to diffuse some of the light you could use frosted acrylic or like kat suggested try to sand the clear acrylic for the same effect.

Hello, I know that paper is very good at diffusing light. Yellow paper should make the light pretty diffused and yellow.
