Well here goes Leona’s Toy Design

on

Since I always want a LEGO mug since I was 3, sadly the first and only time I went to Legoland they were out of stock, so by the power of Tinkercad I decide to create one my own. The mug design is pretty simple, and for the handle, it is a combination of 2 cylinders and 1 sphere. But only the mug is kind of plain (and the mug would be lonely too), so I just come up with making another cup holder, that is a simple base with my favorite character from the Lego movie, BENNY!

I mean, why not, he is such an extra character…

I took the minifigure design from Jack M. : https://www.tinkercad.com/things/izfptoVJvru-lego-minifigure-template-lego-template

Then I created his helmet, I do not know how to make it look like the original where the bottom parts are ripped to look broken like this :

But I can use my paper cutter after the 3d printing is done anyway.

I also made his face : 2 eyes and mouth with a tounge, the tounge part was the hardest of them all. But I want him to look as “Benny” as possible so I did my best.

For the tanker part, I have to make the bottom and top part seperately. Then group them together.

For the sticker on his spacesuit I think I would print them on fabric or plastic then stick them on later.

Can’t wait to have this mug! I hope the liquid in it is drinkable….

I like the idea of a coaster along with the mug. Maybe have the lego dude reacting to the cup in some way. Like him being in shock by how large it is, or him struggling to hold it up or something.

Wow that is a very good idea, I will let him try to climb on the handle or somehow interact with the mug. Thank you a lot, Shane!

The 3D printer is going to produce a single color part so you might think about printing the figure’s face without the detailing and then paint the face on. It depends whether you want the facial features like the nose and mouth to be flat like an ordinary lego or come out a little bit to create some depth. Either way it will turn out pretty cool.

The parts on the face (eyes, mouth and tongue) are separated with the face and I made some holes on the face to plug those features in. I also thought of painting it later but the painting does not look so good on 3D printing. Thank you for your suggestion.

Hi Leona! I think the idea of the Giant Lego Mug and Benny is awesome! I believe the crack in the middle of Benny’s helmet is caused by heavy play over time? You should possibly add a small crack in the helmet model and use a heat gun to possibly mold it.

Hi Kat, I’m happy that you enjoy the idea. Yes the crack in the middle of Benny’s helmet is caused by heavy play over time, yet it is one of his signatures. I’ve never thought of using the heat gun to mold it before, I’ll definitely try it!

This is so clever! Perhaps you could find a way to connect Benny to the base, and maybe have the lego “bump” underneath the mug so they could be “stuck together”.

Hi Leona! I appreciate the detail that went into modeling Benny! I was wondering how you would be ‘attaching’ Benny to the mug.

Hey Leona! Its striking to me that you are creating a mug, I did not think about making something functional if i’m being honest. If I may make a suggestion, you should sand the mug down thoroughly once printed and clean it out a few times with soap and water. That way, I think you will be able to use the mug!
