Lantern Into the woods

on

Holla it’s Leona.

I’m sorry if my Lantern design was uploaded a little late, I have been spending time on my SVG files and looking for the proper “box design”. Since there was no simple box design on MakerCase that I thought would be nice for the project, I was thinking of a lantern whose design is more like a “birdhouse” on a tree branch, and I think the most similar real-life design is the street lantern.

So with a little bit of help from an architect student from the maker space where I do the laser cutting, I was able to make the 3D model in Fusion 360 and convert it into 2D vectors. In order to make it more realistic, I decide to use the flaming LED bulb (I had to bike for 12km to find it, what a day), and since prof. Joshua told us to use “other” materials, I think I would use Japanese clay for the vines surrounding the lantern.

So my idea for the lasers are that each of the laser will represent an aspect of the beauty of the forest. I will let you feel that beauty by your self.
The third vector one of my childhood show that makes me feel “interesting” about the forest, can you guess who ?

And this is my final SVG files, it look kind messy but I hope everything will attach each other well after the cutting.

Wow Leona! Really cool lamp pole idea especially with the idea to have cley vines falling around it! For your four side designs, if I am correct that black is the cut out areas and white is what will be left wood, I am wondering how you plan to attach all the pieces that do not connect to the sides?

Hi Iris, I also thought the black was going to be the cut out part too but after the trials cutting, I decide the black is the cut out of 2 top pieces and the 2 bottom will be the remaining parts. I just redesign some pieces that are apart from each other to make sure they will stay as a whole part in the end.

Hi Leona! On you design sketch I saw that you plan on using clay. What type of clay are you thinking of using and how are you going to bake it?

    1. Leona says:

Hi Kat, I tend to use the Japanese clay and bake it by my outdoor oven, but they haven’t arrived yet, so I think I would save them for the next project :”(

Hi Leona! The design looks amazing! I think the clay around the stand and lamp would add a really nice dimension to your project. I look forward to seeing what it will look like! What material will you be using to laser engrave on?

    1. Leona says:

I would use wood again to keep the “aesthetic” spooky vintage style that the lantern has. Glad you like my design!

Are you planning on firing the clay or sculpting it without firing?

    1. Leona says:

I will sculpt it first the bake it after the sculpting is done.

Hi Leona, I noticed in your design sketch that you mentioned paper. How do you plan to incorporate paper into your lantern?

hello! I notice how playful this piece feels. I am wondering how you are going to display this? In my opinion it would be super cool if you diffuse the light somehow.
