I decide to work on some archeology concepts as I was overwhelmed with a Japanese artist, Katsuya, lately (amazing artist). And since I went to the maker space, I had the chance to look over many different wooden art pieces, I think working with more than one material will be a great challenge as different materials will give you different textures/colors, which will make your piece more astonishing.

So I went over some popular wooden art artists, Martin Tomsky was the one who inspired me. Martin’s artworks are full of layers (many many layers with many materials used), mostly are doodles from tiny pendants to layered sculptural works. It’s like every of his art pieces is a world of its own (and the course’s wordpress cover is Martin’s too).
I want to work on a piece like that, a piece that has its own scene, but a small piece only. The size of the artwork should be 17x21cm only since a bigger piece will need more details to be better.

As in the sketch, each color will represent different layers with different materials. I’ll do my best to search for the look-a-like wooden material that has a similar color. MDF should work fine for the bottom layer.
For the materials, I know that different kinds of wood will be expensive, especially redwood since Doussie is going to be extinct in some countries. But luckily I have an abandoned wooden Doussie sofa set at home, hope that mom wouldn’t notice that —
I’m working on the Illustration layers, it’s hard to define which layer should be seperated, but I think it will worth for the result.
Woosh, just seeing how many layers Martin has on his piece … he’s truly a gifted laser cutting artist.
Hi Leona! Will the antlers (or horns maybe?) and the mouth extend past the frame like the drawing? Really awesome design, looking forward to seeing it later!
Hi Lauren! Yes, the antlers will extend past the frame like the drawing (it’s my intention! ). Sometimes “breaking the frame” is a fun way to make art. // Gonna try my best not to disappoint you! //
Did you use a specific type of dinosaur for your inspiration? If so, which one?
Yes it’s the mix of Allosaurus and Triassic, I tried to make it look as “Natural ” as possible.
Hello. I love that the piece extends beyond the frame. How do you plan to display this?
Greetings. I plan to display the frame as the bottom layer, then the round background, then the trees vector (yes those are trees, sorry for my bad branches drawing) then finally the beast along with the name tag. I will use wooden glue to stick them together, hope I don’t mess it up.
Hi, I really like the style of your sketch! How many layers are you planning on this piece being?
Hi Imogen, I plan to display this piece in 6 layers in total, that includes the very bottom frame (the darkest wooden piece).
Are the tree branches part of the dinosaur head? If they are, what inspired you to combine them?
Absolutely, it’s part of the dinosaur head. So my idea was an imaginary creature that will be a forest guardian and a forestry feature will make its design better. And the protector should never show up – the tree branches will be a perfect weapon for him to disguise and blend in the forest. (And also — I need some branches for my keys hanger — )
Hi! This is such an awesome piece! I was wondering if you are planning on doing any vector engraving or even rastering to make some more details on any of your layers? I see especially on the dinosaur skull some wholes and lines and I’m curious if you plan to make some of these more sheck like marks on your final piece or have the solid plane with cut out shapes like how Martin Tomsky did.
