Greetings, I’m Leona

My name is Nhi Nguyen, or you can call me Leona as everyone in WPI does. I came from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, which is an energetic city with many beautiful modern art galleries. Although being a RBE/CS student, I cannot get rid Art out of my life: it’s part of what makes me today. Art comes to me when I’m alone when I’m blue or even when I want to capture some moments in life. My goal is to apply Art/Design to my future job (I know it might hard in the robotics field, but some taste of art is necessary), or being a freelance Digital Artist as a side job. For traditional art, I love charcoal, sketches/doodles, and watercolor too, although I’m not good at it. For digital art, I can do digital painting and illustration designs. Apart from painting, I also enjoy LEGO and seeing it as a way of performing art, somehow.

I’ll tell you a secret: I was not confident in my arts and was dismissed from a honour Art class in Elementary school, but I believe that everyone can enjoy Arts, so look what I’ve had :

It must have been the wind – August, 2020.

I would say I’m not very good at drawing, but my mixing colors is not that bad. This is one of my favorite digital paintings.

My style is a mix of Manga style and semi-real back then. I always want to draw the most emotional painting, but I guess that will be in the far future.

Effort – 2016

Apart from digital painting, I also did some sketcht cartoons like this back in High school.

Career – 2017

I’m glad that I moved on from those negative thoughts. “Leon Brencht” is a nickname my grandfather (not related) gave me when I was 12, he is the one who inspires me with arts, he was a lacquer artist and material artist, he passed away 2 years ago.

I also do some traditional arts as well, recently I like drawing in charcoal.

I’m really in love with the human figures.

City lights – LEGO project with the BrickGroup

I also do designs, in Illustrator, UI and LEGO.

Nice to meet you.

The works you have here are gorgeous, the detailed portraits with the pastel colors directly contrast the elegantly simple designs below them. Especially love the featured photo and the Entropy cover.

Hi Leona, I will give you the thought provoking badge. I love your piece Career. I love the minimalist style and it definitely gets the viewer thinking.

Art makes you think always makes you look for the second time.
      (Yes, minimalist! )

Thought provoking: Each of your works build on a theme that I find very interesting. I feel like I see a little bit of you, and myself and everyone in each of your characters.

Thought Provoking: I really like your little sketch cartoons, despite being quite simple ideas there’s a lot of detail in them. I also had to take a second look at your photo of the city street after reading the caption because I didn’t realise that it was lego! amazing!

Hi Leona, I think your art is very cute yet thought provoking. The simplified style but darker themes really play well off each other!

  9. Lauren says:

Hi Leona! I’d like to give you the dark badge. This is mainly for two reasons, first I think the lego artwork is amazing and that you did so well conveying dark and light themes with it. Secondly, to be able to channel emotions into your artwork and have them contrast to the style of art your using is really amazing. Looking forward to see more that you create!

Hi! I think the colorful badge because the color choices help the viewer focus on specific parts of each image like the red marks on the test papers.
