When I first heard about the layers project, it made me think of fine details, which in turn made me think of fairytale illustrations. This made me think of the russian stories my mom read to me when I was little. The story I chose to illustrate was “жар-птица” or “FireBird”. I’m planning on creating it out of paper as a diorama, although I haven’t completely figured out the logistics yet. Here is my in progress Inkscape rendition
Here are some examples of russian fairytale illustrations I took inspiration from
I was really struck by Hazel Glass’s works, as this mystical layered structure is the exact thing I want to capture in mine. This specific piece from shadowfox also represents almost exactly what I want my background to look like.
Hi Michelle,
Do you plan to incorporate the Cyrillic letters for title of the story into the final piece?
Hi! What are your plans for the background/ diorama box?
What are you planning as far as coloring each piece?
Hi Michelle! How many layers do you think you’ll use for the piece?
How do you plan to use color for your base layer (the one with the animals and human)?
Do you have a specific color scheme in mind? Also, do you plan to use different colored pieces of paper or paint the paper after it is cut?
