My idea for this Alice in wonderland piece was inspired by the comic art style of Mitch McGee. I was brainstorming comics/cartoons and thinking of layers brought me to the idea of falling then boom! Alice going down the rabbit hole. I am still debating on the final material I will be using. Acrylic or Okoume Plywood are my preferred options, both with pros and cons. I feel the acrylic will bring the colors out better, but plywood may bring out the engraves better. I’m hoping the different layers can convey different parts of the “hole” Alice is falling into.
What made you decide to do the order the layers are in?
Thank you for the question, Emily. I wanted to make sure that no layer covered up a big portion of another and feel the order I have right now gives all layers plenty of visibility looking from the top down!
Hi Marcella! What about alternating layer materials or adding a layer behind Alice? I agree that the colors might pop more with acrylic and the engraves show more on the wood. Excited to see how it turns out!
Hello Lauren! I really like the idea of adding a layer behind alice. That may get me the depth effect Im aiming for without sacrificing the vibrancy. I appreciate your suggestion!
Hi, I really like the patterns for each background layer! I was wondering what size you are planning on making this piece?
Thank you, Imogen! After some thought, I want my piece to be approximately 5 inches by 6 inches. That may change depending on my test cuts. Thank you for asking!
Hi Marcella! I really like this idea and think that the layers will symbolize Alice falling into the hole nicely. I am wondering what made you choose to align the layers in the order that you did?
Hey! Thanks for the question. I aligned the layers the way I did because I wanted to ensure no layer was taken over by the one above or below it.
Have you thought about what glue you want to use?
Hi Shane! Yeah I had a bit of thought on trying plain wood glue on a tester piece and seeing how it held up, then using it on my piece. If I end up using acrylic, I am not too sure at the moment what glue I would use. Thank you for the question, I definitely need to do some research on a glue for the acrylic!
How did you decide how many layers you are going to use?
Hey! I just started with 4 layers as a base and decided that was plenty!
Hi! This is such a fun idea! I love how you are using the layers to recreate the different things Alice fell through on her way to Wonderland. How did you choose the colors for the layers above Alice? I haven’t seen the movie in a while, but green, purple, and orange and colors not usually put together and so I was wondering what your thought process was when choosing them.
Thank you for the question! I knew that I wanted to include a vibrant purple like the cheshire cat from the movie. I then decided to use complementary colors to that purple to create a strong contrast.
