Here is what I’m thinking of for my lantern! I took a lot of inspiration from the movie Spirited Away and wanted to test the limits of what could be considered a lantern. The idea originally came when I realized I could make an eight sided box and thought of the rectangular bath tokens from the movie. I have also been inspired by the artists that incorporate colored acrylic into their pieces and love the way it looks with light features. I wanted to make an interesting lantern that is semi-interactable so I am going to attempt to make the bath tokens removable. I haven’t figured out how to make the inside octagon yet, so if anyone has any ideas or recommendations let me know! I also plan to cut out a lot of test pieces which is the last image, and paint on a design to the top of the lantern.

I am curious how you plan to attach the outer panels to the inner octagon? Also, if I can give you some unsolicited advice, definitely do many test cuts when putting the acrylic into the wood. My layers project involved putting acrylic into the wood cut out, and it took me a lot of work to figure out the kerf and make sure the pieces fit well.
Thanks Sydney! I’ll definitely be doing a lot of test cuts. My plan right now is to have wooden supports attached to the middle section that fit into the rectangular opening at the top of each piece.
Wow I love your ambition and crativity with this project! THe octagon in the middle doesn’t even have to be an octagonal prism, it can just be a cylynder or a rectangular prism with an octagon stuck on stop (idk if that makes sense)
Thanks for the idea Michelle!
This is amazing! I love Spirited Away and love the idea of hanging the bath tokens around a light source. To address your question on the central structure I agree with Michelle and think you could definitely use a circular dowel or solid rectangular box (you could even use MakerCase to design it) and then wrap the lights around like you said. I think wood glue would almost certainly adhere the central dowl like thing to the top octagon piece too, which then you could design to have the 8 arms connected/ part of the octagon’s design.
Thank you for the tips! I’m definitely look into a dowel or rectangle for the middle section!
Hello, How do you plan to assemble this and attach all these pieces together? In my opinion, If you are tying to make this box make shadows having a smaller light source might be helpful.
