Final Projects | Kat Valery

Well the time has come, and all of my pieces are (almost) done.

The Projects All Together:

Layers Project:

I am happy to say the layers project is finished. I ended up using clear Elmer’s glue to piece the project together and finished the accompanying base. As an additional piece, my friend assisted in making an entire coffin to carry the astronaut in.

The main portion of the gluing process took about 3 days including sanding and curing. I had found that the glue didn’t stick to alcohol wipes and the wipes would even be used to remove excess glue. This was helpful in the keeping the project, and myself, clean during the process. Air bubbles were an issue in gluing, but they seem to add a very natural fractal look to the piece. The etched lines showed up well in the piece and the model is almost crystal clear.

Lantern Project:

The Lantern Project is completed and it’s rear hinged door has been attached. I do want to go back and carefully glue some of the layers again, however, the piece looks wonderful as it is.

The box is holding together well for being press-fit and the acrylic painted outside is holding up well. I have to be careful carrying this piece in the wind due to the front being very fragile.

Altered Toy Project:

The print finished this morning and was printed in pink. I’ve decided to roll with it painted the entire piece gray after sanding it a bit and applying Gesso.

I am still working on the wings as I need to measure and design them, however, since I am no longer on campus, I am unsure of whether I can complete the wings, or if I want to at the moment. The piece is solid as it is, and I do plan to eventually add wings, but for what is it now, I call it finished. I will update the photos soon to help show some of the coloring as well.

I enjoyed this class and I’m super happy with the projects I made! My friends have shown interest as well.
I hope to continue more projects like this during my time here at WPI.

Hi! Your lantern project looks even more impressive when lit up and I am struck by how it brings out the contrast in the colors of the piece even more.
I really appreciate the pose of your layers project person and it looks as if you captured a moment in time of him running somewhere.
The detail on your 3D print is very impressive and I wish you luck painting it!

Hi! I really like how for your lantern project a lot of the details can be seen without the light but when the light is added those details and more become visible. I also like that for the layers project a base was added that looks like it also has its own additional layers to it.

Hi Kat! I LOVE how the layers project turned out! It looks amazing and I enjoy being able to see the different layers as you turn it to the side!

Hi cat. I think all the work you have done in this class is very impressive. I am struck by the moment you captured in the layers project. It feels like there is suspense, stillness, and awe all in one moment. I also think that your lantern project is very cool. I love how each layer seems to have its own theme and they all come together and add to each other.

Hi Kat! I am so happy for you because all your pieces are incredible and so you. I am super impressed with how the final version of your astronaut layers project came out and I just love that elmer’s glue is what ended up bringing it all together, literally!
Your lantern project blew me away in person but it did again seeing it lit up for real in the dark. I really appreciate the contrast of blue to pink and the contrasting themes, which somehow perfectly blend together.
I am a huge fan of dragons and yours is especially striking, even in pink. Good luck with the painting and final details… if your willing maybe update back here when it’s all done? I would personally love to see it!

Hi Kat! All of your pieces came out amazing! I especially notice the amount of detail you put into each piece. I can’t wait to see the final result of your altered toys project, happy painting!

  7. Shane says:

I am struck by how the lantern looks one way, but then the colors totally change when the light is turned on.

  8. Alexander says:

The way the light shines through your lantern to contrast the two sides is fantastic! I love the contrast between nature and technology. Your layers project is also super interesting as you took a completely different approach, making a sculpture as opposed to a flatter piece.

  9. Helena says:

i love the way you used two different colors of light in your layers project, i think it looks very striking and cool

  10. Imogen says:

Hi Kat! Your pieces all turned out amazing – I especially like your lantern project, with the colours seem to change when you turn the light on inside! The personal details really show through in all your pieces and I can tell the time and work you put into each design.

  11. Jules says:

Hi Kat! I absolutely love your lantern project, I love how it looks amazing already even without the lights, and how the blue and pink paper look through the RGB cycle!! I also love how unique your astronaut project is, I don’t think many people chose to layer left-right (as opposed to down-up or back-front) and I think it makes it look so cool.

  12. Sydney says:

WOW! All of your pieces are incredible, but my favorite is the lantern. I don’t know how you did it, but the two different color changes between the pink and blue parts of the lantern is so sick!
