Lantern Design – Jakob Sperry

I want to make a Ping Pong ball light display that will fade in and out and flutter different colored lights. I plan to use spherical packing and make a hexagonal base that will hold an LED strip with individually controllable LED’s. I am still deciding how big to make it and how to mount the ping pong balls and how to make the base but here is a quick CAD model to show it in 3D.

    Hi Jakob,
What material do you plan on using for the base?

    1. Jakob says:

The base will be laser cut wood that is painted black

Hi! how many colors do you plan on having? and will each ping pong ball have it’s designated color or multiple colors?

    1. Jakob says:

hi grace. I explained this to you in person. Thank you for the question.

Hello Jakob, Im intrigued by your unique take on this project. If I may add my opinion, I was thinking if you added small panels to each side of the hexagon, it would look clean when mounted on a wall and give you space on the inside to hid the LED’s and work with them!

    1. Jakob says:

Hello, If you mean adding walls to the hexagon so it is a hexagonal prism that is exactly what I did! I am also thinking of making the sides milky white acrylic and having them glow white.

Hi! What is your plan for how the piece will hang from the wall?

    1. Jakob says:

ehhhh idk, it would be pretty easy to just yoink a screw in the wall and plop this on but I should probably think of a more elegant solution.

Hi! This idea sounds so cool, and I am especially intrigued by the plan to have each ping pong ball individually controlled. I was having trouble finding stipes of LEDs that could be programed to have specific sections be different colors at the same time and ended up getting separate strips, so I would love to know what LEDs you found or plan to use to get the color changing effect you are looking for.

I used some Chinesium LED string lights that my friend had. If you look up individually addressable LED strip a bunch of stuff will come up . There is a product called NeoPixles by Adafruit that is pretty good but they are expensive. If you find something, the adafruit library works great for any I2C light strip.

Have you thought about what color you want to make the base? Using a dark color like black would probably make the colored lights stand out even more.

    1. Jakob says:

for sure thinking of black but honestly now that you say it i wanna stain it some dark cool color.

    2. Jakob says:

I completely forgot and accidently glued the balls on before staining it 🙁
