FINAL PROJECTS – JAKOB SPERRY

Layers Project – Wooden Drop

For this project, I wanted to capture the moment that a water drop hits a body of water. I find this moment very beautiful where it is the intersection from the energy of a single drop spreading and dispersing into a lager body. I am using wood to capture the moment in a rigid and strong material. The wood ads a juxtaposition of the fleeting moment of a water drop and the stability of wood.

Lantern Project – Glowing Balls

For this project, I used ping pong balls and individually addressable LED’s to create a small hexagon that would glow and flicker and fade in and out. The program I wrote cycled through five different base colors and then will randomly select an LED one at a time and randomize the color near the base color. Another program I am using runs each LED on a fixed timer and it will fade in and out with a new color.

Altered Toys – Hammer Bike Car!

As a kid, I had three major outlets of play throughout the different phases of my life. With this project, I wanted to bring them together into one toy that captured the evolution as me as a person. The first phase is the toy car phase. This one was when I was young and played with more traditional toys. This quickly turned into building structures out of blocks and Rube Goldberg machines that involved toy cars and other kinetic motion. The next phase is the when I played mostly with tools. I had built a small woodshop in my garage with some bench top power tools. The final phase was when I got into bikes. I started bike touring in high school and traveled all around Europe and America on my bike. This project merges all of these aspects into an adorable and very fun toy car with a wacky center of gravity and a little bike saddle and cranks.

    Hi Jakob,
I really like the color of wood finish you used for the water drop layers project. I love the movement you are able to create with your geometric lantern piece. I notice the awesome little bike seat you added to the hammer car.

    Hi!
In all of your pieces, while they are wildly different I love that they have a duality about them, movement and stillness, computer engineering vs art and light, silliness vs the backstory of hammer car.
Your lantern piece is mesmerizing to watch I cant wait to see the giant version and I appreciate how out of the box it was.
Hammer car is a brilliant toy every kid should have! It brings together building, art, and childhood very well. The various colors of the 3D printed pieces even add to the silliness of the piece.

Hi! I really like that the lantern piece is able to have multiple light patterns and colors rotating through. I also really like the added details of a bike seat and pedals to the hammer bike car to clearly show the bike part of the piece.

Hi Jakob! I really love how your lantern project turned out! I appreciate the use of a microcontroller and programming that you incorporated. It’s nice to see the mix of what we learn at school and this art class.

Hi Jakob! Your pieces came out amazing! I love that you approached each piece with such creativity and always thought outside of the box. I especially think that your lantern project was cool because of the program that you designed to work the LEDs.

  6. Shane says:

The pong ball lights are so cool. I think the hexagon shape adds nice geometry to the piece. I could totally see that in an art exhibit. Good job!

The way the colors dance through the ping pong balls is very striking, and the layers project captures the single moment of a water droplet falling very dynamically. As for your third piece, three words:
    “Hammer Car Bike”

Hi Jakob! I love the movement that you incorporated into all of your pieces, especially the pingpong ball wall and how it slowly transitions between colours with the different shades. Of course hammer bike car is amazing, but I also want to mention how much I like the colour stain you ended up using for your layers piece; it’s almost the complete opposite of the colour of water but it works so well!

    Hi Jakob!
I really like how you changed your layers project. It created a greater contrast between natural and unnatural and it looks amazing!
I’m still quite impressed by the lantern, both for the code and design. I love the geometric shape to it!
Also, hammer car is the best toy in existence. Simple yet fun, what’s more to ask?

  10. Sydney says:

Great job on each of your pieces! I really like how you kept the wood grain visible on the layers project, and I also like how you incorporated the programed lights into your lantern project. In true WPI fashion combining art and science!
