For my toy design I related two characters that I loved growing up: Bagpuss and the Bandersnatch from Alice in Wonderland.
Bagpuss is from an old British show about a toy cat that lives with a little girl in a broken toys shop. At night Bagpuss comes alive with all the broken toys. I had a Bagpuss cover for my hot water bottle that I slept with growing up so I decided on him being the main focus of this toy design.
I altered Bagpuss by making merging him with the Bandersnatch, a character whose design and arc impacted my childhood.
This resulted in this frightful toy design. It’s not the final version (I’m planning on tightening up some of the edges and details etc.)
Update – 05/04/21

I’ve sent the piece to the makerspace to be printed!
wow!! frightening! might be cool to add more rows of teeth in the mouth to make even scarier, or maybe some texture on the body
I’ve added some stripes using the ‘pinch’ tool so hopefully it’ll look more textured when printed!
HI! Very cool concept and you captured the emotion and character in the face well. My only suggestions would be the shape of the ears and like you said the details aren’t finished but the paws could look really cool with some modifications
I added details to the paws but forgot the ears! If my print fails then I’ll definitely add some more details to them.
I love how the emotion on the face of the bandersnatch is kept so similarly in your design. If you had some extra time, I think Helena’s suggestion of texture on the body would really add to your piece. Some simple additions of texture could be added sporadically or strategically to give the illusion of overall texture without you needing to actually texture the entire model.
Thank you! – I added some stripes using the ‘pinch’ tool so hopefully it’ll print looking cool!
Hi! I think after the piece is finished incorporating the two different animals’ fur patterns with paint or something would be cool to add.
I’m planning on painting it with the cream coloured stripes (I’m using pink filament)
Hi Imogen, I’m not sure if you’ve added supports for the teeth since this post, but that might be a good idea. Aside from prepping to print, I think if you painted more rows of teeth inside the mouth that could make it even more frightful!
I added supports when I sent the piece in to be printed, hopefully I don’t have too much trouble removing them!
In merging the two designs, I think having the pink color with black spots would really make this piece stand out.
I’ve sent the print to the makerspace using pink filament, and I’m going to add some cream coloured paint!
Perhaps you could think about tilting the ears a little more forward, as they seem to be a prominent feature on the two creatures. Also adding some slight texturing for fur on the model would make it really cool.
I added some stripes using the ‘pinch tool’, but I completely forgot about the ears. If my print fails I will add that to the next version!
I am curious what you intend to be the final intention of the piece? For example, something that can sit on your desk, or something that has a function, like a pen holder?
I don’t have a function for it thus far, but if my print fails, maybe I could alter the piece so that a pencil can fit in his mouth haha
