Layers Project – Imogen Barnes

on

This is the final version of my piece! I had a basic colour palette picked out of pinks and blues, and I decided as I went along which colour I thought would look good for each layer. I attached pictures of almost every later before I tapes them all together into the final piece. Working with the coloured paper was a lot of fun, and I’m happy with how this turned out.

Hi! I noticed the blues used throughout the piece. I appreciate seeing the different layers of the piece separated out in the post. What were your thoughts on how the piece would be displayed? I have an opinion about the color scheme. I really like the color scheme and how things were layered.

Thank you! I’m planning on displaying it in a frame so that the piece is protected and doesn’t get bent – it’s pretty thick (1/4 inch) so it could just be left on its own aswell!

Hi! What I immediately noticed was the bold sticking color patete and the textured paper, both add something fun to the pieces that was not there in the other versions. I am also now curious how and where you plan to display this piece? In my opinion I love the colors you choose, but if you have more paper (and laser time) I almost want to see this same design in a bunch of different color palettes to see how its changes!

The layers have made the piece about a quarter inch thick, (which is really sturdy!) so I’m most likely going to put it in a small frame that has glass over the front so that none of the little pieces get bent.

I want to make more pieces like this in my free time so I will definitely consider making more of this one with different colour palettes!

Hey Imogen! I am struck by the vibrancy of your project. I find the colors to harmonize quite well with each other. The papers texture reminds me of paper towel (weird, I know), but it adds a really unique sense of depth!

Hi Imogen! I love the color palette of your piece! I really appreciate the bright hues and how you organized the layers. The texture of the paper is interesting as well. I think it would be really cool if you made more copies of your designs with the colors assigned to different layers!

I appreciate how the blues and greens on the outside contrast the warmer colors on the inside. How did you end up deciding upon the colors? I have an opinion about the detailing. It is extremely intricate and I think that the piece is really fantastic over all.

    1. Imogen says:

Thank you! I knew I wanted to focus on two tones (blue and orange-pink), and from there I just picked colours from my colour packet of 30 as I was in the maker space haha. I tried to make it so that none of the colours that are the same were visually touching (i.e. now there is a green outline layer between the two light blues).

Hi Imogen! I noticed how you used multiple color combinations on each piece and appreciate how it all came together. How do you plan on displaying the piece?

    1. Imogen says:

It’s pretty sturdy on its own (1/4 inch thick) but I think I want to frame it so that the front is protected by glass and none of the little pieces can bend!

Hi Imogen! I noticed the color palette of the piece! What inspired you to choose the final palette? In my opinion, the chosen colors create a very fun and kind of “stroll down the boardwalk” feeling. The texture of the cardstock shown in the photos adds to this reminding me of the underside pattern of flipflops!
It’s so fun to look at and makes me smile.

    1. Imogen says:

Thank you! it really does look like flipflop texture! I like how the colours turned out aswell – I wanted to use beachy colours so I decided on the two tones of blue and orange-pink. I knew I wanted the blue to create a cage-like effect over the under colours of pink and orange so I started with those and it was mostly random shades from there.

Halo Imogen, I totally agree with you about the pink and blue combination: it turns out really lively and cheerful. The paper texture also makes a highlight as well. Your layers are really stand out! I’m really looking forward to your upcoming project!

  9. Helena says:

love the texture underneath the main cut out, cant wait to see what material you will choose for the more final cut

Hi! I am struck by the amount of layers and colors you were able to make work together so well. My question is what made you pick this shape?

    1. Imogen says:

Thank you! I based the shape off of a conch shell and then added more abstract patterns within the shape

  11. Sydney says:

I really appreciate how the blues, pinks and yellow compliment each other. I’m curious about how many layers you ended up using in your final piece? In my opinion, I agree with you and think that you piece turned out super great! I wonder how you plan on displaying it as well?

    1. Imogen says:

Thank you! I ended up making 14 layers for the final piece. I’m planning on finding a frame for it so that the small details are protected by a glass cover.

The collage of images showing your process is like an art piece in itself, it reminds me of Warhol’s Campbells cans. The layering of the color is amazing, in an almost rainbow order going from the pinks and yellows to the blue greens. I like how the blue and greens are on top, it gives it even more nautical sea vibes.
