Final Project – Imogen Barnes

Layers Project

For this piece I was inspired by an artist named Hazel Glass, who creates beautiful artwork made of layers of paper. My design was based on a conch shell and then expanded on with patterns and random designs. Creating the layers of this piece was easy, building from the bottom up over a sketch that I had drawn prior. The best part of this piece was watching each different coloured paper being lasercut, placing that cut paper onto the prior one, and watching them slowly build into the final piece.

Lantern Project

For this project, I was heavily influenced by the artistic duo Hari and Deepti and more specifically a deep-sea depiction of a Jules Verne’s classic “The Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.” Similarly inspired by the ocean, I created a piece focused on the lost city of Atlantis being overseen by a giant squid. I had more trouble creating the layers of this piece than the ‘layers project’ piece, as I had to incorporate how the light would shine through. I had to take into consideration how many layers are needed for the light and dark that I wanted, so some needed to be a single piece while others needed a few layers. This method of working backwards really put my brain to the test, but I’m very happy with the results.

Altered Toy Project

For this project, I took one of my oldest stuffed animals named Bagpuss and crossed him with the interesting character of the Bandersnatch from Alice in Wonderland. Creating the piece in ZBrush was my favourite part, especially when I got to see how my design translated into real-life. The only issue I would say I had was with the supports in the mouth – it was very difficult to get them out. In the end (although the teeth don’t look as I originally intended) I like the jagged look that ended up being created.

    Hi!
I really appreciate how many layers and how fine the details are on your layers project, the end result looks amazing.
The concept and execution of your lantern project looks even more impressive looking at it in the dark to be able to see all the variations in opacity.
Your toy ‘creature’ is simultaneously adorable and terrifying which I think is what you are going for from what he/she was based on. Additionally I think you painting him brought out this contrast even more.

    Hello,
Your layers project is absolutely inspiring. The colors and layers are beautiful. I am also amazed by how the light diffused through the different paper and add such an amazing aspect of depth and shadow.

Hi! I like how in your lantern project the depths of everything is very clear as well as how big the squid is by having the tentacles be in different layers. I appreciate that as each layer of the layers project was added it was also photographed so that the details of each layer could be seen clearly before it came together.

Hi Imogen! I love how all of your pieces came out, they’re amazing! I especially like the vibrant colors you used in your layers project, and the overall concept for the lantern project. There is just something about a giant monster attacking a town that makes sense in a weird way.

All of these projects are very well done. I can’t decide which one I like better. I like how you included all the pictures of your layers project. The way they are all lined up next to each other likes like an art piece as well.

All of your pieces came out very nicely. The coloration and depth of the layers project are very striking and it sort of draws you inwards. The image of the giant squid attacking the city is also super cool. The detailing on the outside makes it look like an underwater cave and gives off a dark fantasy vibe.

Hi Imogen! I really appreciate the intricacy in each of your projects! From the teeth details in your altered toy to the visible suckers for your lantern project! I love the depth and volume that is created by your lantern as well!

I am awe struck by your shadow box, and I could not stop staring at it when I saw it in person as well. It looks so professional and well done and I also love the eerie feeling of seeing a giant squid hovering over this ancient city, like a parallel universe version of an alien invasion in a city.

WOW! I love how all of your pieces turned out! My favorite would have to be the lantern project, with the layers as a close second! The lantern project is so cool! I love how you were able to get the layers so perfectly as to decide where should be light and where should be shadowed. I also really like the color palette of the layers project.
