Iris: Altered Toy Design

on

Thinking about childhood toys I remembered this funny little beanie baby that I had gotten around Halloween.. All I remembered was calling him “Plumpkin the Pumpkin”

I know I needed to alter him someway but I was sure how would make sense for me… then (with my moms help) I remembered I was obsessed with setting up all my toys in a very ordered and stationary way when I was only a few years old. I still try to live my life in a very organized way, sometimes it’s a little more organized chaos, but I appreciate everything having a place and everything being in that place. So, with all this in mind I decided to make “Plumkin” into a sitting pen/pencil holder that could chill next to my computer while I work and tate notes. This might seem lame, but giving random objects a real functional purpose is something very exciting to me.

the pumpkin definitely has interesting limbs, i would almost like to see a “droopiness” in the face as well (if that makes sense)

    Hi Iris,
The pumpkin is super cute! Maybe it would be a good idea to make the holes for the eyes, nose and mouth deeper, so they are more easily visible as a 3D print.

Aw plumpkin is so cute – I like the way you designed the limbs, it looks like its a stuffed toy! Is he going to hold the pencils with his hands, because then maybe the arms should be angled up a bit more. Or you could put holes in his head for the pencil to go in haha.

Ooo wait that could be funny! Yes I was thinking the arms would cradle the pen/pencil but I think you are absolutely right that I need to pulled out and up more. Thank you : )

Hi! I similarly was wondering where the pens/pencils were going to be held. I think it could be multiple small holes for individual pens/pencils or a large hole behind the stem to hold multiple. Or even have Plumpkin’s arms shaped to hold a cup that would hold the pencils/pens.

I agree with Imogen and Emily, maybe another option would be to curl one of the arms in so it looks like Plumkin is holding pens/pencils up!

Have you considered making the eyes, nose, and mouth cutouts and incorporating light? I think making it light up somehow would be really neat.

When you first mentioned the pencil holder idea the first thing that came to mind was placing them in the stem. Maybe you could add a hole there (probably easier if you import it to tinkercad) for storing extra pens and pencils.

I love this, its the perfect combonation of creepy and cute. I think if you paint it to match the color of the toy it would take out a lot of the creepy.

Hi Iris! Would you consider adding a cup or holes to the design to make it an actual pencil holder? It would also be really cool to make it a true jack-o-lantern if it was hollow.

Hi Iris! You could possibly import the STL file to TinkerCad and add simple holes to make the pumpkin hold pencils. just as kind of a fun aside, if you have colored pencils or special pencils. and cut out the holes on the fron tto intersect where the vertical holes of where the pencils go, you could sort of change the eye colors by changing the pencils.

Hi Iris! This is so cute. I appreciated your added functionality of holding a pen. I was wondering how to got this level of detail using Zbrush.
