My plan for the layers project is to replicate the map of the coast of Maine where I vacation in the summer. The project will most likely be done in three layers or so- the first layer being the background of the ocean (potentially painting it blue), the second layer being the coastline (hopefully made out of cherry wood), then the third layer being a frame of some sort around the perimeter. I am still working out the details but the final project should look something like this:

I may also add some other layers to create more of a topography map.
I was inspired by the maps sold on the Below the Boat website as well as the beautiful tables created by Christopher Duffy on the Abyss Collection.

Hi! What are your plans for the lettering, more specifically engraving them or making them another layer?
Hi! I think I plan on engraving the letters.
How did you generate the map? Did you draw it by hand/trace it or use software to help?
I drew the map by hand while simultaneously looking at the map online.
Hi! I love that we are both making layered maps of a maine coastline we visit often. I see you are thinking about painting the ocean layer and using cherry wood for the land, have you thought of using any sealant or stain on the layers not being painted? This is something I am personally still debating so I’m curious if you have thought about it too. I can’t wait to see how it comes out!
Hi Iris! Yes, I love how we both have projects relating to Maine! I love staining wood and honestly might just stick with the classic polyurethane. This could change though. Can’t wait to see how yours comes out too!
