Lantern Design- Hannah

on

For my lantern design I am planning on creating a candle holder. The candle holder will have 5 sides and will hopefully have the illusion that vines are wrapped around it.

I plan of cutting out the vines then raster engraving the leaves. My question for you all is should I raster engrave the flowers too or cut them out or a combination of both?

To answer your question, I think the flowers would look better rastered if thats what you plan to do with the leaves, but will look good either way. How do you plan to prevent the pieces in between the vines from falling out if you fully cut out the vines?

    1. Hannah says:

I plan on using glue (wood glue or glue suitable for acrylics) to connect the pieces on the edges. And thank you for your input- I am also leaning toward raster engraving the flowers.

this might be too much work, but I think it would be really cool if for the flowers you cut them out and added a colored acrylic flower in its place.

That is a really cool idea I actually wanted to try and use both wood and acrylic. I haven’t used acrylic yet do you know what colors the makers space has?

What were your thoughts on material?

    1. Hannah says:

I am not sure on material- still thinking on that. Wanted to do wood but also am cautious of that since I plan on putting a candle in the middle. On the other, I could use acrylics and use LEDs. Definitely things to think about.

Hi Hannah! I really like your idea. I think Jackob’s idea is really cool in creating a colorful effect with acrylic pieces. I would definitely take into account how the material interacts around a fire. For example, I know some varnishes contain alcohol and aren’t safe to use, and acrylic paints would melt.

    1. Hannah says:

Thank you for your input- yes I have to think about how the material interacts with the fire. I may actually just end up using LEDs to avoid that problem.

I think that doing a combination of rastering the flowers and also cutting the outlines (without cutting the flower out entirely) would be cool because the light will outline the flower when it’s dark.

That is a fun idea thank you!

Hi Hannah! This is a great idea! To answer your question, I think that rastering and maybe painting the flowers would look really nice!

    1. Hannah says:

Thank you Lauren! I hadn’t thought about painting yet but now that I’m thinking about it I think it would be nice to make it really colorful.

Hi Hannah, I appreciate that you want to vines to connect from side to side, I can imagine how to candle light will cast the continuous spireling vines on the table around it and I think it could look so cool. To your question about your flowers I actually think Imogen’s idea to cut out the edge of the flower while rastering the rest could be a great way to have the flowers pop more than the leaves while also keeping the inner flower details you have in your design.

Thank you! I think cutting out the edge of the flowers is a great idea!
