First Round of Layer Cuts- Hannah

For my project I used Slicer for Fusion to generate the layers of the map of Maine that I want to cut. For the most part, this worked just as I expected but unfortunately, when I went to import the file to inkscape, it did not transfer over correctly. I ended up being able to cut a good portion of the landscape but some of the details did not come at as I hoped:(.

As you can see, there are small numbers Slicer for Fusion uses for construction purposes that I had not expected to be engraved. Next round I obviously will not have those engraved. Also for this round of cuts I just experimented with plywood but for the next round I plan on testing out cherry wood because that is what I would like my final project to be done on.

I am considering staining the different layers of the wood a different color to enhance the altitudes but am unsure if I should start with a lighter shade or a darker shade. Any thoughts?

I think adding more layers of thinner material would bring out the shape in an interesting way. With only three layers it does not seem like you are getting the detail you desire.

I agree, more layers are needed for more detail. I am also considering adding some paint for more detail.

I think that adding stain could really make the different layers stand out and add depth to the piece, I would suggest some sort of gradient of darks and light stains or an increasing number of layers of stain until you get enough contrast

Yes, different types of stain would be a good idea thank you!

Normally on topographic maps, they do the darkest color on the highest peak, so I might resommend doing it that way. I think it’s going to turn out awesome!

Hi Hannah! l appreciate your choice of cherry wood for your final piece! I think that you could add some words to your design to help tie everything together.
