Lantern Progress- now finished

I was able to make some test cuts with the wood to make sure my file measurements were all going to work. I also was able to make a mini version of my lantern out of paper to get a feel for how the design would look and I’m not sure I love it. I have started working on editing the shape of the mountians themselves as well as emininating the lines that were just engraved and potentially adding another line of mountians lower on the design.

Another concept I was thinking about was to move the horizon of the mountians down slightly to allow for more stars and maybe more star variations.

Any opinions about ways to improve the design to use more of the light or make the mountains feel more like mountains are appreciated, or anything else as always.

Here is the finished lanter and I think it looks really cool in the dark and will be keeping it on my desk for the foreseeable future!

    Hi Grace,
I think your idea to make more space for stars is a great idea. One opinion would be to add lots of tiny stars because the laser is great at small details. Another opinion for the mountains, you could do less lines and maybe make a snowcap design?

Hi Grace! I also think adding some tiny stars would be a good idea because it would take up more of the blank space and let more light through!

Hi! I noticed the light source distinctly appearing from behind the mountains in one of the pictures. Similarly I agree adding tiny stars would be a good idea. What were your thoughts about painting the final piece?

Hi Grace! I appreciate the use of keeping the pattern continuous around the whole lantern. How did you keep the pieces together while the cut for the mountains was running through? As per light, in my opinion, I would prefer it to be diffused through some sort of cardstock or other medium,

I designed the pieces while the edges were touching so the mountains would be continuous then ‘broke’ apart the paths so that each side could be moved independently

Hi Grace! I appreciate that you made a mini version, I might do the same! Also to answer your design question, I think that using construction or more wood (maybe a veneer) would add to your design.

Hi! I appreciate how the mountains have many lines running down them – it creates a cool geometric feel to the piece. For your design, if you want more details you could cut out the stars and raster constellation connections between them? or just varying the sizes of a few more larger and smaller stars would also add to the intricacy!

Hi Grace! I appreciate the uniformity and symmetry of your deisgn! This looks very pretty.

This turned out so well! I wonder what you used to diffuse the light on the inside, if anything? I also really appreciate the different sizes and shapes of the stars.
