Layers Concept Sketch – Emily

on

The artists I drew inspiration from for my layers design were Hazel Glass, Shadowfox, and Gabriel Schama. The elements from Hazel Glass that served as inspiration was that a scene was created from the layers and that the top layer was either a part of the piece or provided a view into the world within it. As for Shadowfox, it was the use of paint being added to layers to add more detail as well as that the top layer for several pieces served as a case for the piece, and in some cases related to the piece. Similarly, Gabriel Schama’s use of the top layer for the outline and case of the piece as it began to get into the intricate bottom layers.

From these inspirations I made the top layer of the piece be a shape relating roughly to the piece. The shape is water drops and the scene that was created was a beach scene. For the very back layer and throughout, smaller details would be added by hand by paint/marker/pen depending on the material I used. Similar to Hazel Glass, I’m considering using paper/cardstock which would be easier to have each layer be a different color then if I were to try to paint all the wood or even trying to layer acrylic properly. Another inspiration for the overall shape of the material (a square with rounded edges) comes from looking at my fellow classmates submissions when we were meant to add comments and statements of meaning to them. I found I really liked when the cut square was changed to have the rounded edges so I’m thinking of incorporating that.

Examples of work from the 3 artists that provided inspiration:

Hazel Glass – I wasn’t able to copy any of the images but one piece I liked was Nocturnal Vista which shows the moon through a cave. This served as an inspiration for my piece. It looks like a film was used to allow light to pass through the moon and some stars. In my piece I cut out the sun and the moon in the way back entirely so that whatever is behind it is seen.

Shadow Fox – I wasn’t able to copy any of the images but some of the pieces were the wolf piece that was partially cut to reveal a wolf in the woods and the triangular and diamond shaped pieces with the trees/forest shown.

Gabriel Schama – I wasn’t able to copy any of the images but the pieces that used the outline of a person as the top layer and the layers below were different patterns.

How are you planning on connecting the lower layers with the top frame?

    1. Emily says:

I think it depends on if I plan on keeping it as all cardstock or having the top layer be wood and the lower layers be cardstock. I think because the majority of it is cardstock it will end up being glue of some kind.

Hi, I really like how the raindrop shapes the beach scene! I know Hazel Glass does really small pieces of work, so I was wondering what size you planning on making this piece?

    1. Emily says:

I was planning on having the initial size be the size of the cardstock to try and allow more layer breakups in the sand and ocean sections. However depending on the test cut and even having been working it out in Inkscape I might go smaller.

Hi Emily! I really like the detail in your sketches! I was wondering how you decided on using cardstock for the material for the project?

I really liked the visuals that was created in Hazel Glass’s work that just used paper so I wanted to try it. However I am considering having the top layer be wood and the other layers remain the cardstock. I think when I’m doing the final cuts I will probably cut the top layer in both wood and in cardstock and see which one I like best.

Hi! This is going to be such a cute beach scene but also I love the way your addition if raindrops adds a more thought provoking layer to the design. Are you planning on adding any details to the final layers or just have the solid cut out shapes of the card stock? I am personally not sure if card stock can be vector engraved or rastered, but if you do, did you think about using either technique to put the details like the pail, clouds, water ripples and such from your original sketch?

I was planning on adding smaller details by pen or marker depending on what it was to the final layers of the design. I’m not sure about raster engraving on cardstock, I might try it out when I’m doing another trial of the design but of the details you mentioned those were some of the ones I was probably going to add more details by hand to. Same with the vector engraving, that will probably be tested and put on the lowest setting possible to see if it will work for the cardstock.
