With the updated design I made cuts for the project. I had to do some of the pieces a couple times because pieces got stuck and I had moved the wood too much for it to be recut. I think I might try to incorporate the cut out pieces of Donna and the Dynamos into the lantern. I’m also figuring out how I should place the lights in the lantern.

Update 1: I realized I liked how the record side of the cube with the song titles came out rather than the cut out of Donna running for the top. I was hoping I would be able to switch the two pieces without needing to cut them again but I do need to cut them again because it doesn’t fit exactly. I won’t be able to cut them until early next week so I still plan on finishing the pieces I have in case I change my mind about the order. As a result I’m going to wait before putting the lights into the piece. I also decided on incorporating a platform. It wouldn’t display all 6 sides but would allow the cut out from the 6th side (Donna running) to be visible. Either with wood or acrylic or a combination, the lantern is going to rest on a record (the record’s label is either its own layer or even with main record piece), and the cut out pieces I have of Donna and The Dynamos and one of the Donna running cut outs would be attached to the edge. I think I’ll apply paint to all the pieces I have but will see how it looks likes with different quantities attached. Similarly this can’t be done until early next week.

Update 2: I’ve painted the pieces now as well as the cut out figures. Some of the cut out lines and dots got covered by the paint but I’m hoping light will still pass through. After everything’s assembled I will temporarily put the piece together.
Update 3: I put all the box pieces together without the lights because I’m still thinking about replacing which side will be the top and the bottom. As well as what would be the best way to position the cord. I also think I need to paint the edges of the boxes because paint from the front unevenly got on them.
Update 4: I cut out the record platform shape. I also took apart the piece and painted the edges of the piece and added Mylar sheets to the back of the sides. An issue came up however that now the pieces don’t fit together. I think it’s because some of the paint on the sides got applied too thickly so I’m going to try to sand down the sides in hopes that that will solve the problem. Then if need be reapply paint to the sides.
Update 5: I added another set of cut outs of Donna and the Dynamos to be used on the platform. I think I’m going to start putting together the platform with the pieces so it’s not rushed. Sadly I think I’m going to have to recut the box because while sanding the sides it seems like the pieces might be close to breaking just because of how close some of the cuts were to the edge. I’m going to keep trying because I don’t want to lose how I painted some of the sides, but I have a laser cutting appointment scheduled just in case.
Update 6: The piece is finished. I recut and painted new pieces for the lantern because the original lantern pieces still weren’t fitting together. I waited till after I put the box together to paint the edges of the pieces to avoid the problem from the original box. I put the platform together and grouped the figures to be in front of one of each of the sides of the lantern. I also added several pieces onto the bottom of the record so that it’s lifted up and the wire for the lights won’t cause it to be uneven. It’s not tall enough to hide the battery pack under the record but can partially cover it.

Hi Emily,
I notice the detail you put in while painting your piece. I especially like the ocean landscape. Do plan on cutting a hole on one side for the cord?
Hi! I wasn’t planning on cutting a hole, I was going to try to use one of the holes from the existing shape for the wire. I also changed my light source so I might not have to, and I also am not sure how much the platform will change my plans now.
Hi! I appreciate the amount of different ways you were able to use the laser as well as how much the paint adds to the piece.
I read that you may change your light source so my question is what is the new source and how do you plan to secure this and access the light if needed?
Hi! The new light source I’m going to use are fairy lights and also I’m adding/seeing what Mylar sheets would look like in the lantern. My plan for accessing the light source to replace the batteries/turn it on and off is honestly probably just popping the top on and off or I might try to have the battery box at the bottom of the platform. I think if I want the lights to stay in a specific spot I will either tape or hot glue it into place.
Hi! I noticed the colours you incorporated into your piece – I feel that they are good choices for representing the movie (and they all look nice together with the different shades of blues). I agree that it would be nice to paint the edges; are you planning on painting them the same colours as the piece they’re attached to or a different colour?
Hi! I painted the edges to one of the colors that was used on the side it’s on.
I really appreciate the technique you used on the record player side. In my opinion, I think you should try to clean up the paint job on the edges of the lantern to give it a more finished look.
