Lantern Design – Emily

on

For my lantern design, I decided to do a Mamma Mia lantern. I was able to test cut the design on cardstock and saw some places that could use adjustment location wise because it cuts the piece out or interferes with the edge. I’m thinking of potentially changing one side so that instead of being a new image it’s actually a repeat of another side opposite it or maybe even replacing it with an entirely new image. I’m also considering adding more detail to one of the sides and then changing what is cut out and what would be vector cut on the cube. The dimensions of the piece are 5″x5″x5″ cube. I also plan on painting the cube as the outside finish and ordered LED strip lights for the lighting. The lantern will also be made out of wood however I am curious how this might look as an acrylic lantern.

Artist Question: Would having a repeated image throw off the piece or seem okay? The image I would repeat is probably the ‘Mamma Mia!’ side.

Hi Emily. I am yet to watch Mamma Mia, maybe this is my sign. To answer your question, I think it would be totally okay to reuse the “MAMMA MIA!” design. I do not think it would throw off the piece at all. Good Luck!

    Hi Emily,
I think repeating the Mamma Mia image would be fine. I see you have six images, do you plan on making a special stand to show all six images on all six faces of the cube?

Hi! I hadn’t planned on making a stand but I’m now considering making one and I think I’ll decide after I’ve cut the pieces out.

First of all I love Mamma Mia! I played Sophie my senior year in my high school musical! My question is do you plan to raster or vector cut your images out? If you repeat the Mamma Mia side, it would be okay but I think you shouldn’t repeat a different side.

Hi! With this design it was just going to be vector cuts and cut outs but I’ve changed the design a bit so that it now includes raster engraves.

Hi! For your design I say go for the repetition! You could set them opposite of each other if you are worried that seeing the design 2 times from the same view will throw it off. Since you already have 6 side designs, which one are you thinking will be replaced by the second Mama Mia side?

Hi! I ended up replacing the one that is meant to be the church on top of the cliff but doesn’t really look like that. But I also then shifted the images around so that the ‘Mamma Mia!’ would be opposite the original placement.

Hi Emily! I love this idea. I think the repetition of the title would work well! Are you considering painting the wood once you cut it?

    1. Emily says:

Hi! I’m planning on painting the wood but I’m not sure how much I will end up painting.

What inspired you to choose Mamma Mia as the subject of the lantern?

    1. Emily says:

Hi! I really like Mamma Mia and while thinking of ideas for the lantern assignment I saw the sticker I have that is of the Donna and the Dynamos pose which made me think of why not trying to do a lantern inspired by it.
