The toy I chose to do was a parody of Candy Land. I might end up switching this idea to a different board game or toy but I’m not sure, also because I’m not sure if a board game can count as a toy. I tried to think about the toys/games I played as a kid and it was kind of hard to remember but I do remember there being a lot of board games and because I’m the middle child of five kids, there was someone to always get to play the games with. I chose Candy Land because I remember playing this game a fair amount. Another reason is that someone always ended up having cavities when we went to the dentist as kids, some more than others. So altering Candy Land to Cavity Land, something that results from candy, was a way to alter what the concept of the game was so that it’s no longer this fun, colorful game relating to candy and instead it’s a trip to the dentist’s office. While building it, it reminded me of Lily’s dad from How I Met your Mother who would invent board games that weren’t quite what kids would want to play with and I think Cavity Land is similarly a game that wouldn’t want to be played.
The pieces of the game are toothbrushes and on the board game itself is another toothbrush and floss container. I think I might try to use ZBrush core mini to shape a tooth to then bring into Tinkercad – if I do keep with this idea. A couple other ideas I had related to another board game, an Easy Bake Oven, and or Barbies but I wanted to try this one out first as well as I was concerned about time frame. I think I might try creating the design for one of them to see which I prefer though.
The other toy idea was to make the Easy Bake Oven harder. So I made it difficult to use by adding a lock and chains around the opening where you would slide the food in. I also made a key and might make a couple more different ones so then it gets more difficult to figure out which key is the correct one or even add more locks for the same reason. I wanted to make an Easy Bake Oven more difficult because compared to the baking that I’ve been doing recently to the baking I did with an Easy Bake Oven – it’s very different. I really liked baking when I was a kid and still do today but try to make more things. I think I’m going to do the Easy Bake Oven instead.

I think these are both 2 really good concepts for the altered toys prompt, I am partial to the easy bake oven one because in reality its not so easy. My suggestion/ thought for this project would be to make the chains ellipses, and an added ‘difficultly’ level could be designing one of those sliding locks that is like a maze to get it unlocked at the end.
This is a weird comment to post but a crazy coincidence, when I was little I actually drew up plans to make a digital game similar to this with the toothbrushes and cavity concept. The easy bake oven is hilarious, I just imagine a sarcastic infomercial placing that in front of a child with no clue how to use it. It could be cool to add different things to increase the difficulty as well, like some puzzle box designs or different types of locking mechanisms.
I found the cavity land really funny, it’s a great idea – I also really like the idea of the easy bake oven design, especially if you add more puzzles to it like Amanda said! For whichever design you choose, I’m excited to see how it turns out!
I think Cavity Land is hilarious! I remember playing Candy Land with my little sister all the time growing up! That being said, because it seems you want to go with the Difficult Bake Oven, maybe you could add a really small lightbulb or and LED light inside(if there is and inside) so it takes forever or seems like it’d work but doesn’t.
I think Amanda’s idea of a puzzle box “Easy Bake” oven would be really cool. For your cavity land board game, maybe laser cut the board and 3D print the pieces.
Hi Emily! For the easy bake oven, look around on Thingiverse for a chain model. They chains tend to be printed at an angle so it comes off the 3D printer as one piece, but it can be broken apart to make a full chain.
