Lantern Design – Amanda Smith

I liked the rectangular box with the base that you could see poking out from the sides. I decided to use the design from boxes.py but have it taller to use as a nightstand light. I wanted to put flowers in the design from the movie Tangled, because this lantern project would work great with a magic flower that glows. The lid will have the sun design from Tangled cut out of it. I currently plan to use 1/8″ plywood for this, and have the dimensions at 6x4x4 inches. I plan to have a small lightbulb inside the piece and some sort of thin paper to have inside to disperse the light. I was planning on just coating the wood with a polyurethane, but I’m open to any ideas about painting or other details I could add.

Hi Amanda. I love that you frame the flowers on the side, but then have them extend beyond the frame. Super cool. In my opinion, wood looks best after you sand it to like 220 or 400 grit and then oil it with something like a tongue oil. This box would also be beautiful if you bought thin pieces of some dark wood like walnut, I know Rockler sells stuff.

Hi Amanda! I really love the inspiration you too from this piece. If you wanted your flower to have bright colors, I would use acrylic paints (with a gesso coat underneath) in order to achieve that. If not, I think using different varnishes to make parts of the flower either darker or brighter to create a more subtle gradient effect will also be interesting.

Hi Amanda! I love your idea and am excited to see how it comes out! Have you considered using a color changing lightbulb inside? Also will the flowers be the same colors on each side?

I was planning to have the colors be the same for each panel, and a color changing lightbulb could look really cool.

Hi! I love the inspiration from Tangled incorporated into your design (especially the sun on top)! It would be cool to paint each of the sides with acrylic, so that it looks similar to from the movies. Then when its dark and you turn the light on, it’ll be just the outlines!!

Hi!I notice all the details in each of the flowers and I am wondering which pieces will be left vs which will be cut out and if you are going to have issues with ‘islands’ and how you are going to support them?

I am cutting pieces out of the wood so that the flower parts will be cut out to allow the light to shine through, there shouldn’t be any floating pieces, but I am simplifying the design of the flowers a bit still.

Hi! I appreciate the use of Tangled as inspiration for this design and think you really thought this lantern design through so well, I have a clear Idea of it in my head and can’t wait to see it! My opinion is that it might be really nice to use the less is more idea for finishing your sides, like a nice sanded and finished piece of wood (whether you use poly, stain, or oil to finish it) with the paper behind to diffuse the light could be so warm and elegant.
