Alexander Breiling Layers Project

I ended up finishing my project and I’m relatively happy with how it turned out. I had a little bit of trouble with sticking the two acrylic layers together so it’s a little bit messier than I’d like but I’m over all satisfied. The wood layers are put together with wood glue and the acrylic-acrylic and acrylic-wood were put together with clear superglue.

My final piece and my prototype side by side.

The two penguins put together as I was finishing the paint job.

Hi! I noticed the different blues in the acrylic layers. I also appreciate the combination of materials used. I have an opinion/question about the piece’s display. I was just curious how the piece was able to stand?

Hi! I appreciate that you used a mixture of materials for this piece; the textures of the penguins contrasting with the smooth background really helps pull the whole piece together! Similar question to Emily, I am also wondering how you created the stand for the piece?

Hi! I notice how to use of single colored pieces/ layers creates an easily understood artistic representation of penguins in their icey habitat. I am curious how you decided that penguins were going to be your main subject for this project. In my opinion the use of two very different materials together in this way makes the illusion of a penguin family in front of ice wall so much more believable! I love how it came out

Hello! Your piece reminds me of a childhood favorite movie, Happy Feet. What width of acrylic material did you use? Respectfully adding my opinion that maybe a thicker size could’ve added an increased sense of depth. Regardless, I adore how this came out!

Hi Alexander! I really appreciate that you used different blue acrylic colors for the background. I also like that you painted the penguins based off of what they would look like in nature. I think one thing you could add to the piece would be lights or a stand.

Hey! I notice how you moved the right penguin over a little (I think) and feel like that was a great decision. Also, I love how the acrylic looks in this. How were you able to stand the piece up?

Hi Alex! I noticed the acrylic used for the background. I’m wondering, how are you planning to display the piece?
To elaborate from earlier, in my opinion, I think the contrast between the wood and acrylic came out perfectly with the acrylic creating the icy look and the wood making the penguins look almost “fluffy”. I’m curious, was this intentional?

Hi Alex! I apricate that the penguins seem to have a sense of self and emotion. very adorable. In my opinion, the ice in the background being acrylic doesn’t quite achieve the look of ice, to me it looks almost like blue flames.

I notice that you were able to make your piece stand up and I wonder how you were able to do that? I also wonder if you used 2 different blue colors of acrylic or if they just look different because they are layered? In my opinion, your piece is very cute! It looks perfect to sit on a bedside table or shelf.

Just out of curiosity, do the penguins have names and are they all a family? On a completely separate note, I like how the adult and baby are made from the same base black piece. Did you use two different shades of blue acrylic in your piece? I’m not sure if the piece on top looks darker because it is added on top of another but it really frames the piece well.
