Hi, I’m Jakob.
I am a 5’9” white male who grew up in the Boston suburbs. That being said, like everyone, that does not even start to describe who I am. I think the question “who are you” is very interesting. Sometimes the answer is simply “Jakob” and sometimes the answer takes a lifetime just to start to answer. I think the answer “I’m Jakob” is a pretty good start though. You may notice that my name is spelt with a K. I like to say that that is because my dad is dyslexic but in reality, it’s just because my parents are ~quirky~. A lot of who I am today, which is only a small sliver of who I am, comes from my experience in high school. Before high school was middle school, a place where I did not belong. After school I would fill my time making things and building a small wood shop in my garage. I did some woodworking, I learned to weld, and I learned to laser cut and 3D print. Making felt right, school felt wrong. With my amazing supportive and wonderful parents, we began to find new schools that would foster my creative and ADHD as hell brain. After some poking we found a School called NuVu studio in Cambridge, MA. At NuVu, there are no classes, no grades, no tests, no homework, nothing. Instead, we worked on two week projects all day. These projects were anything between sculpture art to animation to engineering projects to design explorations. The possibilities were endless. At NuVu, my creative brain grew and grew. Every project taught me how to think, how to communicate, how to ideate and more. At NuVu I grew into who I am today. So, to start to answer your question, I’m Jakob and this is me.
I have always had an appreciation for art. Not as much old oil paintings or marble statues, but sculpture art. I was first introduced to kinetic sculptures at the Arthur Ganson exhibit at the MIT museum. I fell in love with the delicate yet powerful wire sculptures that so elegantly moved around. One of my favorites is his piece “Alone” which is a tall poll with a platform at the top and an open wire gearbox and mechanism at the bottom. Sitting off the edge of the platform is a tiny man who’s head turns back and forth. A few years later, I had the opportunity to meet Arthur, he showed me how to use his wire tools and I spent two weeks working on a similar peace. For mine there was a tiny bird flying around in a circle flapping its wings. It was all made by wire and powered by a little hand crank. The end goal was to have a second bird that was hanging down from a second floating platform that would follow the first. This bird would flap twice as fast but never catch up. To me, art is about two things, the expression of thought and emotion, and the exploration of a craft.

hello! i am going to leave you the gorgeous badge! looking at your photos, it seems you have lots of experience with cutting wood and cutting your own shapes. hopefully, we will all be able to ask you for help if we need it ahha. I particularly like the chess pieces that are not chess pieces, perhaps you could explain a bit about them? thanks and have a great weekend!
This is very impressive, I am especially a fan of the chess set. Woodworking is a difficult skill and its cool to see you using it in such a creative and artistic manner. Did you make the bike seat and handles as well?
Hi Jakob, I will give you the inventive badge. The hand crank flapping bird is super sick.
Inventive: Wow, your sculpture work is so cool. I especially like the moving wire sculpture, it moves so elegantly! I also like the chess pieces you made, did you make a whole set?
I worked with a friend on this and we never got to make the full set. We talk about finishing the project a lot tho!
Amazing! I see that you put much effort into 3D material arts, with different textures and shapes. Sculpture art is a hidden gem, one inventive badge to Jakob!
Hi Jakob. I think you work is gorgeous! It’s very detailed and polished!
Hey Jakob, overall I’m really impressed by your sculptures! I’m also giving you an inventive badge for your kinetic sculpture, it’s co cool!
Hi! I am leaving you the quirky badge because of how unique and differently styled all of your pieces are.
Hi Jakob :)) I find your artwork really unique, so I’m going to give you the quirky badge. I find the chess set super cool, and I don’t think I’ve met anyone else that has made something like this. I’m really excited to see what you make in class!!
Hi Jakob! I am going to give you the impressive badge. Your 3D artworks, especially the moving piece is really amazing. I have a feeling that this class is going to be really fun for you, and I’m excited to see what you make!
Impressive! The moving wire sculpture of the bird is really awesome and probably quite the challenge. Making art is one thing, but then making it move is another!
Hi Jakob! I am going to give you the quirky badge because your artwork is very different and new. I really liked your chess piece, and also the woodwork is super cool!!
Hi! I think the impressive and detailed badges because of the amount of time it looks like went into each piece like the time lapse photo, the chess pieces, and the moving bird.
Hey Jakob with a K! Your art is wonderful and my favorite is the wooden bows. I can’t wait to see what you create. I’ll give you the colorful and impressive badge!!
Hi Jakob! Funny enough, my boyfriend spells his name Jakob with a K as well! I’m giving you the impressive badge because I love how unique your art is and how it is not traditional. This class seems very up your ally and I can’t wait to see what you create 🙂
Striking: your art is so interesting and different and it makes you really think about what you’re seeing.
Hi! I give you the inventive badge but I am also so impressed by all the things you can make! I especially like the bird and the chess pieces, which are so different(in an inventive way) and cool!
thought-provoking – the flying bird piece reminds me of Da Vinci designs and blueprints for projects, it looks like such a fun piece and I would have no idea where to start if I were to try and make something similar but now I want to look into making artwork like that
