Introducing: Kate Valery

Hello there, my name is Kat. I’m a CS and RBE Major from New Jersey. Even though I’m from New Jersey, I would usual spend my weekends in Philly since I live 10 minutes away. I would usual hang out with art friends at events then or just explore the city. It then makes sense that through my work that I enjoy drawing/making anything related to cityscapes and robotics.

I’ve worked with digital art for what is coming up on 7 years, and it’s been very easy for me to lean into using my computer for artwork. My family is very tech focused and my computers over the years have become my most powerful tools. You might also find me saying that I’m a “3rd generation digital artist”. This is partially true as my father has experimented with more modern programs and my grandmother worked with early digital art programs. My first drawing tablet was actually handed down to me from my grandmother, and while I’ve stopped using her old tablet, I still use a lot of art supplies that she left behind.

While digital art is my main focus, I enjoy working with physical media such as fabric to create stuffed toys. I use Adobe Illustrator to create my templates and prototype the design in paper. After I think that the paper prototype is close enough to what I want, I size up the template, depending on what the plush was, and cut out the pieces. I then sew them all together, stuff, and then you have a little buddy to hug. “Little” seems a little bit of an understatement as one of my most notable plush projects was about two and a half feet tall. Since I wasn’t able to bring my fabric collection with me to campus, I’m trying to get into amigurumi, or crochet plush making. It makes storage a lot easier for me and leaves me with a lot less waste. I’m excited to do some work with it and get back to making robot plushes.

I’ve dabbled in other media as well, and gearing back more towards digital art, I’ve been trying to finish an animation. I’m keeping it more on the down low until it’s getting towards the end of finishing it since it’s such a beast.

Impressive: I admire anyone who does digital art! I especially love the piece of the room with the bed and glass tank; the way that the light is produced and falls on the objects around the room is so cool!

Your arts gave me the word “Unfamiliar/ Cold” theme in my thoughts, so please take my quirky badge. As a digital artist too, I really appreciate your background setting. ( And your robot plushes is “aww!!”).

I can’t decide between colorful and quirky for your work, so take both badges! I like the use of color (or lack there of) in your digital art and paintings, and your plushies are so fun and unique! I especially liked the styles of the computer scene and the figure in the suit.

Hi Kat! It took me a while to decide which badge to give you but I’ve decided on the impressive badge! I really enjoyed reading that art has been “passed down” in your family and that you’ve been able to make it your own. I also really love the futuristic themes too!

Hi! I think the cute badge because of the all the different plushes. Additionally I think the colorful badge because of the two images of rooms that have pink as the repeated color throughout.

  14. Marcella says:

Hi Kat 🙂 I really adore your dark and grunge-like style. I was going to ask you about your zoom background earlier this week. I knew it had to be a work of yours! Super smooth looking art. I wonder how you will incorporate this into class!

Hi Kat! I love your artwork! I think each piece really holds its own in a way that it is like a complete world in just one photo. I am going to give you the dark badge because the two pieces, room and your cover picture, both have dark or overcast emotions but are also so strong in their place and story.

  19. Jules says:

Hi! I’m giving you the detailed badge, I love your digital art and your attention to detail! I also love your color choices!
