Self Portrait – Kyria Nelson

For my image I wanted to showcase my interest in computer science and game design. Using double exposure, I placed a photo of a landscape I adore (I use that exact photo for a background, actually) into my head. I placed a photo of some random code in the background to try to give the illusion that upon crossing over my head, it becomes the landscape. To further this illusion i used another image to make it seem like the code is becoming pixelated and taking shape around my head. Then I added a border of clouds to complement the clouds within the landscape as well as shroud over the code, perhaps to symbolize that I am not very good at coding just yet.

Self Portrait Collage

I decided to make a self portrait more about what I am and what I do, rather than about me myself.  I decided to mix a couple of metaphors here and there.

For example: here, I’m literally living out of a box of Pop-tarts, indicating both my love for the sugary snack and what choices I make in my spending on breakfast. The desk’s a mess, the area in the box is worse. Scattered about are what I’m currently putting a lot of focus onto  – homework, planners, etc., but it’s just out of reach of the arm trying to claw itself out of the warmness of the box. Also in the picture are my favorite things, my markers and sketchbook, that are kept close because I want to get back into working with my art.

I also wanted to put myself under hard light, with that sort of fear and focus that I need in order to get through my classes.  I’m under that blanket because I probably tired myself out.

Self Portrait Tattoo Collage

For my self portrait collage I decided to represent the elements that reflect my life, such as music, my favorite places, sayings, religion, and where I’m from, in tattoo form. I’ve always thought that tattoos are essentially a collage of your life experiences, so I thought that it would be an interesting way to represent them. I decided to keep all of the “tattoos” black and white to represent my engineering way of thinking, and because I think they visually look better. For my background I decided to make a gradient to represent the sun and the water, because the photo was taken at my favorite beach. My biggest challenge was making them look realistic. To do so, I used a lot of shadowing, as well as distortion of the shapes and letters to look more natural on the different parts of the body. I used several images from the internet as well as a few different fonts in the lettering.

Self Portrait Collage

For this project I took  a picture of myself and decided to overlay it with some stars and a galaxy background. I felt that this represented my love for space and I thought it’d be a cool concept to make myself look like the galaxy since we are technically all made of star stuff. I added the sun to the picture to create a contrast between the dark colors of the background.

Self Portrait Collage

My self portrait collage is based off of one of my senior pictures. All the photos in my college are my personal photos. In the background there are two photos. These photos represent that I love traveling and flying around the world. One photo is from the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore and the other is from a plane while flying over Alaska. Then my body is made up of two of the most important things to me and real make me who I am. Thats consists of a picture  of a soccer game and me pole vaulting. I purposely kept my body faintly in the background to try to show that this is what is important to me. I put all of this in a window of my favorite restaurant from Taiwan to try to represent this as a window into my life.

Self Portrait:

For my self portrait, I started with an image of myself, then I vectored my whole face and neck. I chose vectoring because I like the style, I think it gives it a great sort of lifelike but simplistic image. By chance, the original lighting kept one half of my face lighter and the other darker, which I really liked because the split lines up with my hair part, which I utilized in the background. For the background, I decided to chose two things that make me think, that being space and music. The division of the background is dictated by the parting of my hair, with a galaxy on the long side, and words on the short. I pulled the image of the galaxy from NASA and used Photoshop filters to make it more simplistic, and fit with the vector style. The lyrics on the right side are from “We Don’t Believe What’s on TV” by twenty one pilots. I’m not the biggest twenty one pilots fan out there, but I’ve always really liked the lyrics to this song, which describe concerns about the failure /changing of our dreams and the support and love of those you care about (If you’re interested you can view the lyrics here: https://genius.com/Twenty-one-pilots-we-dont-believe-whats-on-tv-lyrics). For my hair, I sampled a drawing of the texture of wood. This is just a visual I really like,  but my childhood home, that my family no longer owns, had a lot of wood in it, and I always loved the patterns as a kid. I was really interested in how the texture could be used here to mimic that of hair. For this I adjusted the hue and saturation of the wood to give it a brown purple tint (brown for my hair, purple for the image theme (also my favorite color)), then I created a clipping mask to encompass my hair. Finally I vectored the jacket I’m wearing, and placed a sampled and altered image of vintage flowers on the jacket. I changed the coloration of the flowers and used a filter to adjust them to fit the theme I set for the photo. Then I overlaid it on the jacket. I chose flowers because anyone who knows me knows I wear way to much floral, and I liked how it added to the bottom half of the image.

Collage Portrait

For my self-portrait collage I incorporated many of the things that I am passionate about including running track, playing soccer, watching racing, and enjoying the great state of Maine! I tried to incorporate the images to create a collage-like effect, however, I did want to make sure the images blended into one another to create a united work. I started with the picture of myself with Sebago Lake, Maine in the background. Running being very important to me, I added two images of myself running track, one from high school and one from here in college. I then focused on my love for soccer were I created a pattern of my favorite professional soccer team’s emblem, Manchester United, and the premier soccer team that I played for Rosevelt Soccer Club. Even further, not only am I wearing my high school soccer sweatshirt in the photo, but there is also a field somewhat hidden on the right horizon line. The race cars on the left have come from a track called Beach Ridge that’s very close to my house, somewhere I would always go when I was younger. I finally tied the piece back together with the allusions to Maine. In my sweatshirt, I added a picture of Portland Headlight which is iconic to Maine and is also very close to a cottage that my family and I stay at almost every summer. The silhouette of the State of Maine is shown in the background because although I’m away at college it is still very close to me.

Self Portrait Collage

I decided to create a collage of some of my favorite activities. Over many years I believe what I love to do has shaped me into who I am. I blurred all the pictures into the picture of myself to symbolize their effect on me. You can really see this effect in how I was able to blur my hair into the mountains. I tried to roughly split the picture in half with  bluer colors on the right and more earthy colors on the left.
