For my final I decided to use some of the elements from my mystery scene but change what’s going on. I used the basic kitchen I had before but totally revamped it, adding details, extra textures, and appliances/decorations. I snuck a few of my Photoshop pieces in as art around the room. I also used the character I made before and one prop from my mystery scene, a bloodied knife. I chose not to use text boxes, so my short comic is more observational. It’s more darkly lit and the actions are very small so its more up to the viewer to decipher whats going on. There’s a lot going on in each shot because the set is kinda busy, so you may need to zoom in.

Character Model – Amelia Ring

I did the modeling in both Maya and Zbrush, but due to a lack of experience in Zbrush, most of the work was completed in Maya. I deviated from my concept art a little bit to get around a few issues, mainly that I couldn’t achieve the hair style I had hoped, so I added a big floppy hat to the character instead. I also changed her outfit to be a bit more convenient to make. The following are a few renders of the model, including one with her in the mystery scene (even though that makes no sense cause, you know, contamination of evidence, but whatever).

Character Concept Art

I chose the nosy neighbor Mrs. Hofman as my character to model. Being a regular person, I had to give her a few distinct features/accessories to make her stand out. She has crazy shorter hair, big cat eye glasses with a glasses chain, and a cat pin.

Mysterious Objects 2

Maya really didn’t like rendering my objects and scene, so the first image below is the rendering, followed by a screenshot of the whole scene and individual photos of the smaller items.

Mysterious Objects 1 – Amelia Ring

It had been nearly a week since Mrs. Hofman in apartment 15 of the Smith Street Complex had seen her across the hall neighbor, Jerry Omar. Jerry was known to be scarce, but the two nearly always passed each other on the way to their way to work in the morning, exchanging friendly remarks. Mrs. Hofman had noticed his absence Monday morning, not thinking much of it at the time. She had heard a racked coming from his apartment the night before, and assumed he was having a hard morning after the Superbowl. However, as the end of the week approached, her curiosity and concern began to build. She decided to approach Jerry’s door, placing her ear against it, listening for any signs of his presence. As soon as she got close to the door, she was hit with a foul stench. Mrs. Hofman’s concern grew at this discovery, and in the morning her landlord was letting the police into apartment 17 of the Smith Street Complex, to discover a disturbing scene. In the entryway of Mr. Omar’s one bedroom apartment was the tail end of bloody streaks and shoe prints in blood that could be traced into his open kitchen. There, in the kitchen, were the remnants of a gruesome scene. A pool of blood, browning from age, laid in the center of the small kitchen. The edge of the pool was feathered from apparent haphazard cleaning job, indicated by a bloodied scrubby brush laying on the checkered floor. Strewn on the floor, bordering the pool, was a cracked cell phone, smashed glass, and bloodied kitchen knife. No one was sure what to expect when entering apartment 17, but this was certainly not a scene anyone had anticipated. It is unclear at this point what the nature of the incident is, but Mr. Omar has been reported missing and the local police are hard at work on the case.

Self-Portrait Collage – Amelia

Self Portrait:

For my self portrait, I started with an image of myself, then I vectored my whole face and neck. I chose vectoring because I like the style, I think it gives it a great sort of lifelike but simplistic image. By chance, the original lighting kept one half of my face lighter and the other darker, which I really liked because the split lines up with my hair part, which I utilized in the background. For the background, I decided to chose two things that make me think, that being space and music. The division of the background is dictated by the parting of my hair, with a galaxy on the long side, and words on the short. I pulled the image of the galaxy from NASA and used Photoshop filters to make it more simplistic, and fit with the vector style. The lyrics on the right side are from “We Don’t Believe What’s on TV” by twenty one pilots. I’m not the biggest twenty one pilots fan out there, but I’ve always really liked the lyrics to this song, which describe concerns about the failure /changing of our dreams and the support and love of those you care about (If you’re interested you can view the lyrics here: https://genius.com/Twenty-one-pilots-we-dont-believe-whats-on-tv-lyrics). For my hair, I sampled a drawing of the texture of wood. This is just a visual I really like,  but my childhood home, that my family no longer owns, had a lot of wood in it, and I always loved the patterns as a kid. I was really interested in how the texture could be used here to mimic that of hair. For this I adjusted the hue and saturation of the wood to give it a brown purple tint (brown for my hair, purple for the image theme (also my favorite color)), then I created a clipping mask to encompass my hair. Finally I vectored the jacket I’m wearing, and placed a sampled and altered image of vintage flowers on the jacket. I changed the coloration of the flowers and used a filter to adjust them to fit the theme I set for the photo. Then I overlaid it on the jacket. I chose flowers because anyone who knows me knows I wear way to much floral, and I liked how it added to the bottom half of the image.
