Midterm Self Portrait

Collage:

Original:

This was a photo taken when i was volunteering in Sri Lanka to take care of turtles. It took me a while to create separate masks for me and the turtle. Also this is the first time of my trying the double saturation effect, so i just  played round with different blend modes and image adjustments until i got the effects i want. The turtle turned out pretty good in my opinion, but i couldn’t find a good blend mode for the torso and legs, so those parts ended up to be pretty much entirely covered by the fill images.

The illusion i wanted to make is a turtle flying in the air, where there is a night background right above and a land background right below.

The grass field background for the legs is taken from juliefletcherphotography.com, and the torso background is one of the cover artworks form the music game Deemo.

  1. The images that you have chosen to use inside the silhouette of you and the turtle really work together well. The simplicity of the background makes all the attention focused on yourself which works very well because of all the unique textures within the silhouette.

  2. All of your images are combined beautifully and work incredibly well together. I like how you kept the turtle’s main features, especially around the head area, but still have an image overlayed onto it. And the really elaborate pictures coupled with the plain background complement each other nicely

  3. I like how you can still tell that the turtle is indeed a turtle in your collage, as well as how it blocks out the line in between the land and sky images. I think blurring the edges of your silhouette would give the image a nice touch.

  4. The color scheme of this image really works well with the transition from day upwards to night. I also like how each mask blends into the next one seamlessly and actually looks like they belong together.

  5. I enjoy the level of detail and different colors of the silhouette, but I think adding some elements and details of your body from the original picture to show a more human side would have elevated this image to another level.

  6. The color scheme works very well and I think the effect you were going for was achieved very well. If I could suggest anything it would be to maybe try and erase your hands from the turtle to make it really look like the turtle is flying without any help.
