Vector Tracing Portrait – Kyria Nelson

This is my lovely cat Whiskers – I was very inspired by the WPAP Portrait examples given, and tried to recreate some of the effects with a non-human subject. This is the result:

The most difficult part for me (by far) was getting the blocks of colors to look nice and compliment each other. I know absolutely nothing of color theory so I ended up sampling a bunch of colors from a couple WPAP portraits I liked and using those in my own work of art.

This is the source photo. I know her claws are extended, but she is actually attempting to grab my sister’s hand (she is the one taking the photo for me) in order to coerce additional petting. Her right eye is cloudy because she is blind in that eye.

  1. Very innovative interpretation of this assignment. Interestingly, the neon color scheme works extremely well. Maybe even better than if you followed a more realistic palette. Wait, definitely better than a normal color scheme! I think maybe adding a shadow below the extended arm would make it easier to see that its arm is reaching for the camera.

  2. I think this color scheme works excellently. I’m sure it would’ve been excellent had you done it with natural colors, but this pallet adds a whole other layer of interest to this final project and really makes it unique.

  3. The color choices add excitement as a general effect, but they also accentuate the texture of the fur really strongly. You asked during the critique about the difference in the lines of the eyes, and while matching them would most likely have worked out, it seems to me that the way you presented them better supports the recoloring. It also preserves a certain reality through the simplification, in a way. Lovely piece!

  4. The color scheme in this is really nice and well-chosen. All of the colors make this piece abstract, in a sense, but they aren’t so over-the-top that they obscure the cat form in the picture.
