Subtractive Assignment

For my subtractive assignment, I decided to use a picture from the intro of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! I took a screenshot of this frame from the intro to edit.

Original

For my edited photo, I decided to remove the magic carpet and everyone atop it from the picture.

Edited

In the original context of the image, the creatures down below, called Piranha Plants, are chomping at everyone on the carpet above. However, after editing everyone out of the image, this no longer appears to be the case. In the edited picture, it now appears that the left Piranha Plant is lunging towards the right one, while the right one appears to have been hit or to be dodging the hit. The removal of this integral piece from the picture changes the scene’s context entirely. I decided to do this edit because I wanted to show the role that object placement has in different forms of media, in this case, television shows. Despite the Piranha Plants themselves not changing their position between images in the slightest, the way the human eye perceives what is happening is different because of their surroundings.

  1. I like how just removing the carpet and its people changed the context of the entire piece. Although now that I look back at the originals, I can’t help but now only see the two plants attacking each other and not at the carpet!

  2. It is very impressive how you were able to make the sky blend together as if nothing was ever there! The cloud, however, does seem as though it has a chunk taken out of it.

  3. I love how this changes the focus of the picture from the carpet to the plants. It also changes the context of what they’re looking at. Looking at the second picture without seeing the first would give someone a completely different message.
