Midterm Self Portrait

Gotta be honest, this is a mess, but I enjoy every piece of it. It is a cutout of my head with this random cloud picture masked onto it and a static-y background. The plane represents my interest in the military and history in general. I am both piloting and gunning the plane. The plane is shooting a stream of 1’s and 0’s, representing my major (CS) and love of coding, and shotputs, which I threw back in high school. The purple vehicle is a Banshee from the Halo series. It’s there both because I play a lot of video games but also because I think Halo is the best game series out there (Halo: Reach >>>>> the rest). The mountain in the background has a double meaning. Firstly, it’s the Lonely Mountain from The Hobbit, and although most people didn’t like the Hobbit movies I thought they were pretty good. Secondly, I like the outdoors and love to hike so what better way to represent that than a mountain. I chose to have a cloudy background:

  1. Because it was easy to work with and incorporate my ideas into
  2. Because I don’t pay attention in my current classes because one of them is early in the morning and the other one is just absolutely boring (I got my head in the clouds)

  1. I like how you have the plane shooting at the banshee. Also, it makes it look like the two planes are flying around the mountain. It makes it really interesting that you have your elements actually interacting with each other.

  2. I always think that the double exposure with clouds is gorgeous. Besides that, the dogfight between the plane and banshee is quite comical and forces the viewer to really think about the piece. One suggestion I have would be to leave the background a simple flat color rather than a textured grey in order to keep the viewer focused on the details in the face, not the fine texture around it.

  3. I like the superimposing of the image in your headspace, and the fact that the larger head is barely there compliments what you said; you feel barely there in class. I caught the smaller guys in the plane as well.

In vectoring the area, a few edges of the neck chipped off. While the rest of the image looks fairly solid, the wobbliness of the outline sort of breaks it a little. The background has an ornate pattern, but the tiling keeps it barely noticeable, bringing the focus to your head. It’s a pretty good strategy.
