Autobiography

My name is James and I am from Los Angeles California. I have lived in Los Angeles my entire life until coming here. I am freshman on the cross country and track teams here at WPI and am pursuing aerospace engineering. A few of my hobbies include surfing, mountain biking, and drone racing/model plane building. Growing up in Los Angeles has shaped me as a person. I live on the outskirts of Santa Monica, so I have grown up really close to the beautiful Santa Monica mountains. Mountain Biking has allowed me to explore these places and cultivate a love for nature. Similarly to mountain biking, surfing has caused me to love the ocean. These activities have given me an appreciation for nature and this is where my creative inspiration comes from. In high school I enjoyed channeling my creativity through ceramics as well as stained glass classes.

This was one of the first largish pieces I threw on the potters wheel. I was attempting to capture the different depths of the ocean through a gradient with the glaze. The glaze didn’t really turn out as planned but I still like the outcome. Topping of the piece is one of my favorite sea creatures; the orca.

In high school I created a series of Lord of the Rings characters. This is William the troll from the Hobbit. I am very pleased in how I was able to capture the skin color and texture of the troll.

This type of vase is called a hydra. The narrow neck and wide lip was very difficult to throw and I believe it is my most complicated throwing piece to date. The blue and green glaze was used to give the vase a more natural feel.

Since I love surfing, I decided to take on this project and create a stained glass of someone surfing. Cutting the glass in small thin strips proved very difficult, but I believed it was necessary to create the shape of the wave.

As an aerospace major, I decided to make a small airplane icon. I attempted to model it off of a Cessna 182 but it came out a little different. I envisioned some of the early Apple icons while creating this and therefore I went for a more simplistic approach. The two dots on opposite sides of the propeller yield a cool effect when the picture is shrunk. The propeller looks almost as if it is moving.

My name is Kyria, and I’m a freshman CS major. I’ve lived in Massachusetts for nearly my whole life. I love art and have been inspired to draw since I was very little thanks to various books, shows and video games. I mainly use more traditional methods for art (watercolor being a recent favorite), but I have never been afraid to make art digitally as well. I “took a break” from making art for a couple of years, but have found myself becoming more interested in creating more art as of recent.

Here are some tattoos I’ve done on my friends in Copic Marker, which lasts for a couple of days and is surprisingly vibrant on skin (not sure about how safe it is, though…). These are a few years old.

More recently I’ve gotten into card making. Here’s a card I made for a family friend featuring the Punisher from the Netflix adaptation.

Finally, here’s some photo evidence of the time Rick Astley liked my vector adaptation of his face, made entirely of the lyrics of “Never Gunna Give You Up”.

My pixel art is one of my favorite Pokemon, Mew. I have wasted hundreds of hours across several Pokemon games, and have created countless fanarts and “fakemon”. Also, the original gameboy sprite of Mew is really ugly (I encourage you to look it up), and I wanted to see what I could do in less pixels.

My name is Ben Steeves, I am a freshman,  and I am a Mechanical Engineering major. Some of my most memorable life experiences have come from playing soccer and running track in high school. I am also running track here at WPI so hopefully there will be many more great experiences to come. Athletics aside, I have always been interested in art. In high school I took studio art and that has been my main focus when it pertains to art. For anyone who is interested, I put below a link to a website that I created to display some of my artwork.

Currently I have focused on 2D art forms such as drawing and painting which leads me to be very eager to learn about the digital world of art!

The deer skull below is a still life drawing that I did with pastel pencils. My art teacher in high school had collected a bunch of animal skulls because they have unique structures and surfaces that are difficult to draw. Many of the students in my class were interested in the collection and we all did a still life drawing of a different animal skull.

The pumpkins are another piece that I did in my high school art class. This is a watercolor painting in which I mainly focused on an interesting composition of the pumpkins.

This ink pen drawing is of my dad’s 1965 Ford Mustang. This piece was created free hand with a fine tipped Sharpe marker. It did in fact take a long time, however, my dad was very surprised when I showed it to him finished.

Below, is my low-res icon image. This image is significant to me because it represents my love for track. The image consists of a track spike with wings, three stripes, and the number eight hundred. The track spike or shoe with wings is iconic to running and thus the focus of the icon. The three racing strips are to portray speed and competition. To me, they also make it look like the spike is tearing through a finish line. I also thought of the racing strips as ones on a car because I enjoy watching Nascar. The number 800 is significant because my primary event in track is the 800 meter dash in which I finished first for the State of Maine in my last high school outdoor track season. Running is a major part of my life and doing it every day at WPI pushed the fact that I had to create a track based icon!

Hi everybody, my name is Jordan Gold and I am currently a freshman cs major here at WPI. I’ve lived in Massachusetts my whole life and was excited to go to WPI for school. I have liked art throughout my life but have mostly just done it in classes at school. I took some computer science classes in high school and decided to go for it in college. Right now my artist activities are mostly limited to projects in cad.

This was an art piece I made for a previous class here at wpi which focused and 3d and spatial design with physical materials.

For my icon I made a controller as video games are a central part of my life and I feel as though I often get inspiration from them.

My name is Amelia, I’m a freshman Mechanical Engineering Major, and I’m also attempting to get a teaching license. I’m originally from Western Massachusetts, but my family moved to Southern Maine when I was pretty young.  I was very into art and theatre when I was younger. I competed in the Peace Poster Competition for three years in middle school, and won for my state in the 8th grade. I also started acting in the 4th grade and ran wardrobe (3 years) for my school theatre company. In high school I became heavily involved in my school’s robotics team and engineering program, leading me to WPI.

My first real experience with digital art software was actually in  a CAD/technical drawing course at my high school.  My TA for the course ran a unit on using Blender for 3D modeling and animation. You can do some pretty detailed work with the software, but we stuck to basic animal modeling and animation, given the time restrictions. I dug up an old photo for a model of a gazelle when it was nearing finalization.

The summer of my senior year I got interested in drawing using tablets and online software. I bought a cheap drawing tablet and worked using FireAlpaca just for fun. I mostly doodled and experimented with various styles and with the capabilities of the program. Below are a few thing I did while testing it out.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For my Low-Res Icon I chose to make an icon of a pine tree in the snow. We’ve got a lot of pine trees up in the pine tree state so it makes a good symbol of my home.  Also, when I was a kid my siblings and I spent a lot of time playing in the woods, so I have a lot of strong memories associated with the nature of Maine, especially in winter (plus, they’re really pretty, especially in the snow).

Hi, my name is Wonjae Jang. I am a freshman RBE major. I grew up in Massachusetts, not too far away from WPI. I used to be a pretty creative person when I was young. I had artwork in the Worcester Art Museum when I was in 5th grade and in the State House when in 7th grade. Then I found video games were pretty cool and it was all downhill from there.

However, in the past year, I’ve rekindled my artsy side by editing youtube videos. Also, I’ve done a lot of Solidworks in the past 3 months. Below is a boat I’ve been working on with a few other people for Sailbot, an MQP project.

The icon that I created was a sort of collage of music notes. Originally I had just had the two-quarter notes, but then I thought looked at it and it looked empty and bland, so I spiced it up by not having it centered and filling up the white spaces. My icon was music notes because I started playing violin since a very young age. I’ve always enjoyed the violin while growing up and it is something that I can always play and have a good time.

 

Hi, my name is Rachael Sallie, and I’m a freshman CS major. I was born here in Massachusetts but moved to Pennsylvania when I was 9. I’ve been making digital art for the past several years and I largely use apps on my iPad like Procreate and Sketchbook Pro. I tend to draw a lot of nature and scenery, and I also enjoy taking photos of these things as well. My family often stays by a pond in the woods of Maine during the summers, so this may have influenced my interest in nature. I also enjoy playing tabletop rpgs like Dungeons and Dragons, which has influenced some of my artwork.

This is a drawing of my character named Silis in a tabletop rpg called Spell. After being separated from her twin sister Liril, she was raised in the woods by a spirit named Lucaris and is now able to use plant-based magic. She feels a strong connection to nature and the spirits as a result of her upbringing, but also unfortunately lacks experience interacting with other people.

I participated in Inktober 2017, which has a theme for each day. This drawing was for the theme “Gigantic”. I knew I wanted to draw a giant tree, but choosing a final design was difficult. I drew many different trees before I got to this final version.

I drew this after feeling inspired by some art videos online. I wanted to try drawing something different from the typical forest scenes I tend to draw. It was largely practice drawing water and some man-made structures in the background.

I have been working on improving my drawings of people and in this drawing I especially focused on figuring out the shading of facial features and drawing fabric.

This is my most recent drawing (not counting my icon) and one of the first things I drew after getting back to campus. I was inspired to draw a river after seeing a really pretty drawing of one online. I also took this opportunity to practice drawing more man-made structures.

I drew a tree for my icon due to my interest in nature and my tendency to draw trees and forests. My inspiration largely comes from nature, so I felt it was an appropriate symbol to represent me.

 

My name is Caeli Tegan and I’m a senior majoring in Biology and Biotechnology. I hope to find a Public Health grad program to pursue after graduation. I’m originally from the South Shore, but grew up in Southwest Florida, where it is around 85 degrees year round and everything is really flat. I really like eating food, binge watching Netflix, and cats.

I’m horrible at most forms of art, but have a lot of experience with Photoshop, and still enjoy finding reasons to use it. Recently, I mostly use it for simple sorority related things like recruitment cover photos and sticker designs.

For my icon, I made a cat with its tongue sticking out, because I’m a crazy cat lady. I have cats two at home, one in Worcester, and briefly fostered five kittens I found in the East Garage, even though I’m allergic. My life goal is to actually foster kittens, but I should probably get a job first.

 

Hello! I’m Sarah Love, and my majors are IMGD and CS. I’ve been drawing since I was nine or ten years old, and drawing digitally since I was eleven. I was homeschool for much of my younger life, so I had a lot of time to work on artistic skill and music. I primarily work with a drawing app called Procreate on my iPad, and I also work with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. My creative inspiration tends to be from nature, animals, mythology, and games. As well as being an artist, I am a professional A Cappella singer. Some examples of my work are below!

These two images above are from one of the D&D campaigns I am participating in currently. They depict my character Liril exploring the world with reckless abandon.

This drawing was inspired by an Inktober prompt, which is an art challenge that happens during October. Every day there is a different prompt – this particular hydra was inspired from the world “split.”

This ink drawing was inspired from the game Overwatch. The character’s name is Ana, and I drew it while preparing for Inktober and am rather proud of it.

 

My icon is an old-fashioned set of scales. I chose this for a variety of reasons –  primarily the balance that I value and try to keep in my life. I have been known as a peace-keeper by many of my friends, and I try to be as fair and equal as I can be. I chose not to make the scale too elegant or fancy because I also value simplicity. The centerpiece is much darker and thicker because I come from a very supportive family, and in turn, that helps me give support to others when they need it. There is also a double entendre of the word “scales” as it can also be used in reference to music, which I am very passionate about.

     My name is Jordan Stahl. I am a sophomore studying Mechanical Engineering here at WPI. I am adopted from China at the age of 2 and have been in PA my whole life. I have a summer home in Maine where I love to be outdoors. I have traveled two times in high school and both were huge eye openers for me. I love taking photos outside while hiking or exploring new places. I also enjoy taking photos of people or events I’m involved in. I am very into cars and would love to design them some day.

These are two photos of an architecture class I took at my high school. My high school had a huge stem program where I got to take many design and engineering courses. This is where I discovered my interest in design and engineering. The first photo is where I re-designed an old space and turned it into a urban space. The other photo is a garage I created for a more modern approach.

This is a photo of a Hummer I created in an engineering course at my high school. I took many engineering courses there and love cars.

I decided to do a car from the 1980’s. The De Lorean was a sports car manufactured for the united states from 1981-1983. I chose this car because I really like gull-wing doors. I like the rather modern approach to a basic thing like a door. I love looking at cars.
