Hey there,

My name is Cameron and I’m a freshman IMGD Major (probably going to double major with CS).  I’m from Los Angeles and I’ve lived there my whole life.  I’m not great at art, which is why I’m focusing on the technical aspect, but I try my best when I have to draw for classes. When I’m not given a prompt everything I draw ends up as a dragon or a bear in some form as you’ll see later.

This is the last thing I did in the painting class I took in my last year of high school. Again, not amazing, but I think it came out alright.

As far as other creative outlets, I like to write a fair bit, mostly in fantasy settings I create because I just find that genre so immensely entertaining. However, I rarely finish things because I either forget or get horrible writer’s block. In the same vein I also like to DM Dungeons and Dragons as often as I can because that is like collaborative storytelling where I make the world.

As for my icon, all I can really say is I told you so. I like bears, I like fighting games. Here ya go, kung fu bear.

Hello Everyone,

My name is David Robie, I’m an Aerospace major from Massachusetts. Some cool things I’ve done include three 55+ mile Canoe trips in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, and marching down Main Street in Disney World with my hometown marching band. I’m fairly new to art, but I really hope to learn quite a bit. I mainly like to build with my hands rather than draw on a piece of paper, as you can see below:

This is my attempt at a Dyson “Bladeless” fan. It took hours of layering and bending and hot gluing cardboard while making sure it was structurally sound. Unfortunately the source of air I used was not efficient at all and resulted in the Bladeless fan having barely a breeze pass through, but it still looks pretty cool.

I also made a ceramic “Ducky Momo” from Phineas and Ferb for my younger brother. I think its adorable.

Moving onto my low-res icon below, I chose to do a stormtrooper. Im an Aerospace major, so of course I love space, and therefore Star Wars. The stormtrooper mask made sense with the color scheme, but I also wanted to change it up a little. I inverted the colors in order to be a little different, and to bring out the outline a bit more in relation to the color on the helmet. Not to mention there are black suited storm troopers too, ya know.

 

 

Hello!

My name is Nicole Escobar and I am a freshman and as aerospace engineering major. I live in Massachusetts and have pretty much grown up here in Worcester my whole life. I have a passion for creating things whether it be traditional art like pencil and ink drawing as well as things like crafts and origami.  I have always had an interest in art and while in high school I took a traditional art class and I have some experience with 3D modeling software.

This is a still life drawing I did for the first art class I took here at WPI

And this is another still life from a class I took in high school. Art used to be just an idea I had in the back of my head that maybe would be fun to try, but this class is really what inspired me to take my art more seriously.

For my low-res icon I decided to recreate a tattoo of a bird that I have on my back. I thought this would be something interesting about myself that people usually don’t know because for the majority of the time the tattoo is hidden.

 

I’m Javy Sibel. I am freshman ECE major.  I have a good amount of experience with photoshop and enjoy doing it when I have time.

My life experiences have mostly come from soccer in one way or another. I have referred soccer, coached a girls travel team and played soccer till I had a big accident. Additionally my friends have done a lot to shape me too.

I really haven’t had much time lately to do any creative activities. I mainly have been hanging out with friends, playing soccer and traveling. Unfortunately with travel and all the soccer things I do I haven’t had time to do creative things.

This is one of the first photos I photoshopped so its not very good. This was the only picture I could get access to show my artistic side.

I made my low res image of a soccer ball. This is due to the fact that most of my life revolved around soccer and it has greatly influenced who I am today.

 

 

My name is Jonathan Shiery and I’m a freshman working towards a major in Interactive Media and Game Development. I have lived in California for most of my life.

Throughout my whole life, I have played video games and have wanted to become a game designer for the longest time. The way that games have influenced me and the way that I see games influencing others has inspired me to go on this path to become a game designer. I love to dissect games to see the design choices made when the game was in development. I have even began to create video games of my own in my spare time. Video games create a certain feeling for me that no other form of media can replicate, which is why I want to pursue down this path to create games of my own.

I’m not an amazing artist by any stretch of the imagination, however I do like to experiment with it every once in a while. I like to gravitate towards pixel art when creating a piece of artwork, since it is simpler and honestly more fun to create than other forms of artwork.

I made this image as my final project for AR 1100. My thought process was to try and make a peaceful scene. This was also when I started experimenting with different features in the program Gimp 2. I used it to keep the pixelated look of the birds, while also trying to make them feel dynamic.

In a discord server, the admins were holding a contest to create a Mario-themed Halloween icon for the server. The contest allowed the use of any official Mario artwork, so I ended up using some for my submission.

I based my low-res icon on my love for studying the ideas of game design whenever I can. To me, these subtle design decisions are important to realize so that I can apply them myself when I become the game designer.

My name is Ryan Cirella and I’m a freshman computer science major. I’m from Connecticut and have lived near the beach my whole life. I love water sports, playing video games, and reviewing music.

I watched a lot of Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon as a child and, because of this, have taken an interest in animation. In seventh grade, I published a short animation to YouTube.

Since then I have also taken up an interest in building robots and joined the robotics team in high school. Our robot made it to the 2017 Vex world championships.

I made my low-res icon of me watching Cartoon Network as a child. I did this because of the influence watching cartoons has had on me and how it has brought me to the current interests and place I am in life.

Hi, my name is Bradley LaGrasse and I am a freshman RBE major. I’m not a very interesting person; I play too many video games, I’m great at math and I love discussing anything science! I’m not much of an artist at all and I’m certainly jealous of people with such amazing abilities to visualize and create works of art. But, hopefully this class will allow me to explore different ways to go about forming artwork, both in my head and on a computer.

As I mentioned, I’m not much of an artist. I can’t upload the picture right now, but it is my RBE 1001 robot that my team constructed for the savage soccer competition, and it certainly is a work of art to me. It was able to collect both ping pong balls and tennis balls and raise the bucket to dispense them into plastic tubes of varying heights.

This is my 32 x 32 pixel icon.  I love to visualize, build and talk about robots, so I figured it would be a great icon for me to create. This certainly represents my passion for robots and my aspiration to become a robotics engineer here at WPI.

I look forward to getting to know more of you as the term progresses and I can’t wait for all the knowledge and fun this class has to offer!

Hello all! My name is Kyle France, I am a freshman Mechanical Engineering major. I’m from California, an eagle scout, and a four year FRC veteran. I love travelling and finding new music.

My main creative outlet is building and painting plastic models. I started with Warhammer 40k, but I have almost entirely switched to the Mobile Suit Gundam plastic models. I have also dabbled in various digital art mediums, but I haven’t put a lot of time into 2D art… yet!

My icon is a pair of digital calipers. I always strive for precision in whatever I do, which does actually often involve real calipers. A fun fact would be that the last object I used calipers on is an ice cream cone for a Solidworks project.

This is my FRC team’s robot from 2016, Manta. I worked on a few systems but most relevant is the clear polycarbonate skidplates visible down the side and top of the robot. Though not their sole function, the pieces needed to allow low hanging obstacles to pass over the robot. Being highly visible, I also tried to fit the parts into the sleek aesthetic of the bot without reducing effectiveness.

These are two photos of one of my more recent projects, which had a lot of firsts for me. I actually customized the design of the kit with other parts, plastic plate, and milliput putty. I tried a few new airbrush techniques, and did my first photo editing for one of my models.

I recently began playing around with learning DSLR camera magic, so I threw in a photo of a fish from a trip to the Sawtooth mountains in Idaho. Cheers!

My name is Nina Taurich and I am a CS major. I have always been interested in both math and art. Art has become something I do for fun because I really enjoy making things. I see art as a way to express my insights and questions about the world around me.

These projects were inspired because I am really interested in computers and questioning the effect of them on our lives.

 

 

I did some work with Illustrator in high school and learned how to use a laser cutter. This was a Christmas tree I created out of cardboard because Christmas is my favorite holiday.

I decided to depict a hamburger and a cup of tea first of all because they are both things I like to eat/drink. Also, because I am a dual citizen of the United States and the United Kingdom. I was born in Los Angeles but both my parents are from England.

 

Hey everyone,

My name’s Matt and I’m a senior chemical engineering major. I like to describe myself as a jack of all trades, attempting to be master of a few.  I played a lot of sports as a kid and I still do today (hockey for WPI’s team) and they really influenced me as person. They taught me patience and how to be passionate and truly throw yourself into something. My position, the goalie, is especially demanding because it requires me to work in high pressure and high responsibility situations whilst remaining calm and collected. However, I also am passionate about video games, graphic design, and music. I’ve been working with Photoshop for roughly 8 years now as I picked it up while bored in high school. Sometimes I may make a banner for a philanthropy event for my fraternity or sometimes I might make a sticker for my laptop.

I also enjoy video editing and have a large background in that as well with programs like After Effects and Sony Vegas. Content creation is something I hope I can continue long past college. One of the creations I was most happy about was a design for a formal event for my fraternity, meant to be printed on ceremonial mugs that we receive at the event, shown below.

The event, titled the Red Carnation Ball, is a yearly event that requires a new design yearly, of which I have been designing for the past 2 events.

One of my most proud productions was a video for this past year’s Greek Week competition in which we needed to create videos based off the theme “Trouble in Paradise.” My brothers decided to make our own iteration of the famous Gilligan’s Island Intro.

Lastly is my icon. As you can see, my icon is of a goalie mask and a hockey puck in the corner (felt like I should utilize ALL my space). I truly think being a goalie has made me the person I am. It is an extremely special position that requires a lot of personal sacrifice both mentally and physically. You must be able to take on the responsibility of being the last line of defense for your team while also acting as a leader on the ice.
